Chapter Thirty Seven

Baby Oh Mine

‘Do you think it would be alright if we went for a drink?’
I shrugged.
‘I don’t see why not. I’ll come back soon. Come on!’
I grabbed his arm and we walked off in search of a café to get a coke or something.
After we managed to scoff some cake down, we walked around for awhile before I realized the time.
‘Shit! It’s almost five o’clock! I left Tay almost an hour and a half ago! I gotta get back!’
We flew to where I had left Tay but he wasn’t there.
‘Damn! Where could he be?’
‘Maybe he went home?’ Will suggested.
‘Maybe. I should look around though.’
Half an hour searching produced no Tay and I was getting worried he would be mad at me.
I spotted Mark and he told me that Tay had left about half an hour ago, pretty annoyed that I had disappeared.
‘He’s gonna be sooo pissed at me!’ I groaned.
‘And probably suspicious! Not to mention jealous! Look, I’d better go. I’ll drop by his house and see if he is home.’
‘I’ve got my car here, do you want a lift?’
‘Uh, no. I don’t think so. The last thing I’d better do is be seen getting out of your car if Tay is annoyed. No offense, but I don’t think he’d appreciate that.’ I shrugged.
‘Yeah. I understand. Ok, see-ya tomorrow at practice!’
‘Yeah bye!’
I walked to Tay’s.
When I arrived, I knocked on the door and Avie answered.
‘Hey Ave! Tay home?’
She grinned but then frowned.
‘Yeah…..but he said he that if you came then he doesn’t want to see you.’
My mouth dropped open.
‘He what?’
‘He said he hated Will too.’
I was a little shocked but before I could say another word, Diana called Avie and she had to go, shutting the door on me.
I walked home in a daze.
Avie and I were great friends. What had I done to Tay to get him to turn her on me?
I tried to ring Tay but he didn’t want to come to the phone.
I cried myself to sleep.
I was still a little unsure as to what I had done.
I mean, I only went shopping with a friend, so why was my boyfriend so cut at me?
He’d blown it a little out of proportion in my opinion.
The next morning, I rang Tay again and he answered the phone.
The phone call lasted about twenty seconds, when I tried to ask what I had done wrong, he told me I should know and hung up.
Dazed, I sat looking at the phone for a few minutes.
Suddenly it rang in my hand.
I managed to answer it.
‘Hello?’
‘Peta? It’s Ike.’
‘Hey Ike.’
‘Can I see you?’
‘Sure. Wanna come round? I don’t think it’s a good idea if I come there.’
‘Yeah. Ok, I’ll be round in ten.’
‘Ok, bye.’
I hoped Ike knew what was going on because I sure didn’t.
As soon as he arrived, I blurted out,
‘Why won’t Tay talk to me?’
Ike followed me up to my room and sat down before saying,
‘That’s why I’m here actually. It’s about Will.’
‘What about Will?’
‘You and him yesterday.’
‘Yeah….we went for a soda.’
‘For an hour and a half? Tay came home almost crying. You mean everything to him you know. He trusts you.’
‘But we just had a coke!’
‘Tell that to Tay. You know, when we were away and you went out with Will, it nearly killed him. He didn’t show it, but he was so depressed. He forgave you because he loves you and doesn’t want to lose you. He just hoped you felt the same. And so do I. The two of you mean a lot to me and I don’t like to see this. Yesterday really hurt him, whether you meant it or not.’
I burst out crying.
‘Oh Ike! I had no idea! I didn’t mean to hurt him! You know I didn’t and he does too! I love him! He means everything to me too! Will is only a friend!’
Ike leant over and hugged me.
‘I know. I’ll tell him. I’ll do my best. I want to see you two happy.’
‘Thanks Ike.’
He left telling me he would tell Tay and see if he would call me.
The rest of the afternoon I sat in my room and listened to ‘I will come to you’ and ‘Surely as the sun’ over and over again.
When the phone rang that night, I almost collapsed with relief when it was Tay.
I was ready to pour my heart out to him but he cut me off.
‘Meet me at the mall in ten minutes.’
And he hung up.
Without thinking twice, I flew to the mall.
I could see a storm brewing on the horizon.
When I got there, I wandered around looking for Tay before I noticed a stage set up in the food court.
The mall itself was pretty empty so I was more than curious about the stage.
I walked over to it and spotted Zac poking his head out from behind a curtain.
‘Zac! What’s all this? I didn’t know you had a concert!’
Zac looked over.
‘Nether did I!’ and his head disappeared.
Confused, I grabbed a seat in the front row and sat down with the few people that were there also.
Louise, Sarah, Ryan and Mark came up and sat down next to me.
‘Did you’s know about this concert?’ I asked them.
They all mumbled and I didn’t catch a word.
Suddenly, Ike came out on stage and spoke into his microphone.
‘Thanks for coming at such short notice, in fact, I don’t think you had any notice! Anyways, this is will only be a three song set, which my romantic bro Tay inspired. So, I hope you enjoy it! Tay?’
Tay came out on stage.
He spotted me and went to the microphone while the other two came beside him, Ike with his acoustic guitar and Zac with his shaker.
‘I know at times everyone begins to feel that the world is swallowing them up, like it is all too hard. But even if everything seems to be going wrong or things don’t turn out the way you planned, there is always someone out there ready to pick you up when you fall and love you no matter what.’ He looked at me and I could see pain in his eyes, as well as the love I knew he felt for me.
And I hoped he could feel it from me.
Ike strummed his guitar and the first strains of a song I knew wasn’t one of theirs floated out.
‘Look into my eyes, you will see, what you mean to me/Search your heart, search your soul and when you find me there, you’ll search no more/Don’t tell me it’s not worth tryin’ for/You can’t tell me it’s not worth dyin’ for/You know it’s true, everything I do, I do it for you……’
Tay sang with such passion and emotion that I felt tears streaming down my face and I wanted to rush up there and hold him forever.
But Ike had said it was a three-song set and there were still two songs to go.
I knew what they would be.
As soon as ‘Everything I do’ was over, they bowed their heads and waited until Ike started the next one, ‘I will come to you.’
The words had never sounded more beautiful and meaningful.
Sarah sat on my left and put her arm around my shoulders.
‘Oh I will come you, oh I will come you oh oh oh oh oh oh, oh I will come to you, oh I will come to yooooooouuuuu.’
At the end of that song I was sobbing like a baby and Tay looked up and I could see tears in his eyes too.
‘I’m sorry.’ He whispered then motioned for me to come up on stage.
I knew why, so I did.
‘My angel.’ Tay whispered as he helped me up on stage.
‘My rainbow’ I answered.
We sang ‘Surely as the sun’ together and the crowd dispersed after their applause.
The stage was packed up and Tay and I went for a walk outside in the gardens.
Tay spoke, but was unable to meet my gaze.
‘You know, sometimes I just feel that even though people think I have the world at my feet and I can have everything, the things I really need and value always seem to be just out of reach. Now everything feels like it’s falling into place.’ He looked up.
‘I’m sorry I didn’t trust you. It’s just that, well, I know Will really likes you and I didn’t want everything so perfect get messed up. I need you, you know.’
‘Tay? Don’t.’
‘I love you.’
‘I love you too.’
‘And you really are my rainbow. Don’t ever forget it ok?’
‘I won’t Tay. You know I won’t.’
The storm I had seen brewing had passed and stretched right across the sky was the most perfect rainbow I had ever seen.
‘Look!’ I pointed it out to him.
Tears, this time of joy, flowed freely as Tay and I walked home.
