Chapter Thirty Five

Blue Suede Gorillas?

'Hey yeah!' he grabbed me and we kissed before I pulled him up.
'We'd better go, it's getting dark.'
And we set off home.
About a block and a half from the Hanson house, we spotted Zac talking to an old man wearing a tattered black jacket.
'Who's that?' I asked Tay as we drew closer.
'I have no idea. Hey Zac! Whatcha doin'?'
Zac turned around.
'Who's ya friend?' Tay asked his brother, motioning to the old guy.
'Oh! You're just in time! Elvin was just about to tell me about the time he sang with Elvis!' Zac grinned from ear to ear and looked back to his friend.
Tay and I exchanged amused looks.
'Oh, Elvin, this is my brother Tay and our friend, well Tay's girlfriend and my friend Peta.'
Elvin stuck out his hand to Tay.
'Pleased to meet you young man. And you, lovely lady, my, what a pretty one you have here!' he bowed slightly.
I didn't know whether to take him seriously or burst out laughing.
'Little bit of chivalry never goes astray. Seems lads today have no time for good old fashioned manners. Anyway, where was I?'
Zac piped up eagerly and Tay and I nearly collapsed trying to hold in giggles.
'You were gonna tell me about you and Elvis!'
'Ah yes! Elvis and Elvin! Those were the days! Anyway, it all started back in 19, now what was it? Oh darn! I can't seem to remember! Anyhow, I was in Vegas at the time, me and my pet monkey, or rather gorilla bub, Kiki and we were a travelling act you know? Goin' from place to place singing for the people. Mighty good we were too!……..' he continued to waffle on but I had tuned out.
I looked over to Tay and saw him grinning slightly.
I caught his eye and he shook his head as if to say, 'This guy's lost it!'
I couldn't help but let out a small laugh.
Zac frowned slightly in our direction but was too caught up in the old man's tale.
'…..and we sang that night at the Blue Moon Casino. Big joint you know. All the top bands play there now, Dolly Parton, Reba whats-her-name, Slim Dusty. We were the star attraction. Our hit song was 'Blue suede shoes' and Kiki would put on these little blue tap shoes and dance 'round the stage. Everyone loved us! Opening night was…….'
Tay quickly grabbed my hand before tapping Zac on the shoulder.
'Ah Zac?'
Zac didn't turn.
'Look, Zac we gotta go ok?'
Zac merely waved his hand in dismissal and looked up at the elder man with utter admiration.
Tay and I quickly made our exit.
'Can you….. believe… that?' Tay laughed, between gasps.
'Elvis and Elvin! And a gorilla!' I managed to giggle back.
'Should have called the song Blue suede gorillas!' Tay cried, sending us both into hysterics.
By the time we arrived home, it was dark and we were all laughed out.
