Chapter Two

First Impressions

I thanked her and she walked off.
I managed to find it.
The woman behind the desk had heard I was coming and gave me a timetable and map of the school.
‘You missed homeroom, I’ll just make a note on the attendance list. Oh, and see me at lunch about a locker.’
‘Thanks.’ And I was off in search of American History.
Here are the subjects I had; luckily I was a junior so I could pick what I wanted. American History, Math, English, English Literature, Drama, Geography and Social Studies. I had one period of study hall a day too.
I managed to find my way to room 46.
I felt so nervous about walking in there I almost turned around and fled home. To make matters worse, the class was already in and settled.
As I walked in the door, all eyes would be on me.
Taking a deep breath, I knocked on the door.
An elderly woman, the teacher, (duh!) came and let me in.
Despite what I was thinking, that she would announce me to the class, she smiled, took the slip I gave her and told me to take a seat.
And again, despite what I was thinking, not everybody was staring intently at me; quite a few people were too engrossed in their work to notice me.
I quickly found a seat in the middle row next to a girl with short bobbed brown hair.
She smiled a little as I sat down.
So, my entrance was average.
So were periods one, two and three.
Recess was a little daunting though.
As I had no friends, I had no one to sit with or anything, I made my way discreetly to a tree and sat down with my food.
A few people passed close to me and a few even smiled or said hi, so that was ok, but no one actually came up and spoke to me.
I was feeling pretty down by fourth period, but I saw something on a notice board that cheered me up a little.
‘Enroll for singing lessons in the auditorium at lunch, or if you are already at an intermediate level, audition for the school band.’
I had been taking voice lessons since I was young and I was, if I do say so myself, a pretty good singer. I had had one of the best teachers in southern California and had won two ‘Californian Young Performers Awards’ for my age group. So, you know, I was hot. (ha!)
But that was yet another downfall about Tulsa, no decent voice trainers in the district or singing in the schools.
Hey, maybe I could get Hanson to give me some pointers!
Anyhow, that cheered me up a little as I realized I had something to offer the school body and maybe a way to impress people and make friends.
During fourth, something else happened that cheered me up.
I sat down next to a very pretty girl with long blonde hair.
I tried to make myself as invisible as possible as it was obvious she was one of the most popular girls and I wasn’t in the mood to be teased by anyone.
So I was sitting there quietly and waiting for class to start, when the girl turned to me and said,
