‘Actually, I was pretty young. I used to sing around the house and school and no one used to tell me to shut up, they told me I was good so when I was eight mom got me a teacher.’
‘What kinds of things did she have you do?’
‘Oh, just the basic stuff, because I don’t really learn that way. I know this sounds kinda weird, actually it’s very weird, but I don’t learn like that. I just hear a song on the radio, and can kinda hear the melody and the levels and I can just sing it. I don’t spend time on learning notes and things.’ I shrugged, thinking they probably thought I stupid.
‘Really? That’s amazing! You just hear a song a few times and you can sing it?’ Taylor seemed pretty impressed.
‘Yeah. But I’m not one of those people who can read notes in music or hear a piece and can play it, I just match the melody somehow.’
‘Oh yes. It’s actually quite common. Not with my boys unfortunately! They need to sit and practice and practice!’
‘Oh, I need to practice too, I can’t just get it right first time.’
‘Oh yeah. So, you wanna sing something else?’ Taylor smiled.
How could I say no?
‘What?’ I asked.
‘Anything.’ Diana told me.
‘Well….I’ve got my keyboard here, how ‘bout I play something and you sing?’ Tay suggested.
I was blown away.
To sing with Taylor playing? Wow! Was this happening?
I was at a loss for words for a moment and only just managed to stumble,
‘Uh, sure….are you sure?’
‘Yes. I’m sure. Now, hang on while I set it up.’
He set it up while I tried to psyche myself up and prepare myself to sing with Taylor Hanson accompanying me.
‘Ok, I’m right.’
‘What are we doing?’ I asked him.
Mom and Diana had migrated to the kitchen to look around for a minute.
‘Hang on.’ And he started to play.
‘I think you know this one.’ He smiled shyly.
After the very first note I knew what it was and I nearly fainted.
Taylor Hanson wanted me to sing with hi my very favorite song in the entire world.
It was ‘I will come to you.’
I must have looked shocked because Taylor smiled.
I also must have missed the first line because he started to sing.
‘Waoooh, ohhhhh. When you have no light to guide you, and no one to walk beside you I will come to you, oh, I will come to you/when the night is dark and stormy, you won’t have to reach out for me, I will come to you, oh, I will come to you’
He urged me to join in but I was at a total loss.
Taylor Hanson was singing ‘I will come to you’ in MY house, practically to ME!
‘Sometimes when all your dreams may have seen better days….’
I managed to find my voice as he prompted me to continue.
