Awakenings.......
Matt and Peta turned to leave, but before they did, Peta let go of his arm and leant over to Tay.
‘What’s the time?’ Destiny asked Ike quietly.
‘Ike? Ike, are you in there?’
‘Shit.’
Tay fled as fast as he could from under that tree.
Destiny could not stop the tears that formed in her eyes.
Tay slumped down to the pavement.
‘I’m really sorry about Destiny and all.....and I can’t thank you enough for listening to me tonight. It’s been my dream to tell you, somehow, how much your music means to me, and to be able to confide in you and have you confide in me is, well, wow! Anyway, I just want to thank you, and wish you all the happiness. It’s all I can offer I’m afraid.’
Tay smiled and hugged her tightly.
‘Thank you. For tonight too, it meant a lot. We’ll keep in touch, ok?’
Her face lit up.
‘You bet!’
They exchanged addresses, and even phone numbers.
‘If you ever need someone to talk to, my friends say I’m good to talk to.’ She smiled.
‘Thanks, I’d really like that. And I promise I will.’
‘Hey, if you’re ever lonely, you can call on me, I’ll be here for you, all you’ve got to do is call.....’ she started to sing.
Tay laughed.
‘Wow! There is no way I ever thought I could actually hear that song and know Taylor Hanson thinks that about me! Jeez! Tonight has been awesome!’
Tay grinned, he knew he would keep in touch with Peta, he liked her a lot, but his heart belonged to Destiny.
‘Well, I’d better go find Ike I guess. I’ll call you soon? And I hope everything turns out ok.’
Peta smiled but it faded quickly.
‘Ah Tay?’
‘Yeah?’
‘I do know where Ike is.’
‘You do? Where?’
She pointed sadly to the weeping willow in the corner of the yard.
‘Cool, thanks!’
‘And see-ya!’ and he was off towards the tree.
He didn’t hear Peta whisper after him,
‘But I wouldn’t go over there if I was you.’
Ike held his watch up and tried to read it but it was impossible.
‘I can’t read it, but it’d be about eleven I guess. Maybe eleven thirty.’
‘Maybe we’d better go back inside.’ Destiny suggested.
But Ike had a better idea.
Tay called his brother’s name and started to push through the low hanging branches.
He hoped to find his brother under there, hopefully wrapped in some girl’s arms.
Some other girl.
The only consolation Tay had had all night was the possibility that maybe Ike and Destiny weren’t together.
Maybe they were just holding hands the other day as friends.
As Destiny and he had so often held hands when they were younger.
‘Ike?’
‘Ike? Are you....’ the words died on Tay’s lips.
‘What?’
‘Look.’
‘Oh.’
Tears stung his eyes as he crashed through the house and out onto the street in front.
But he had already seen.
It was too late to run now.
It was with him forever.
‘Oh Ike! Poor Tay! He’ll be devastated.’
‘Dest! Don’t cry! Why are you crying? I thought you wanted it this way. You knew we had to tell Tay anyway.’
‘But I didn’t want him to find out like this! It’ll break his heart! Oh god! He’ll never forgive us.’ More and more tears spilled down her cheeks.
‘Destiny, please. Oh baby, he’ll get over it, you know he will.’ Ike tried to comfort his girlfriend.
But even he doubted whether Tay would get over it or not.
Even he was not completely sure.
He felt as though his life had been sapped from him.
He felt as though he was no longer part of his body, but merely someone, or maybe even something watching from outside.
Like he was drifting somewhere, only watching the body that was him suffer, and not being able to do anything to ease the pain.
Not that he was even sure he would have wanted to do anything, he was no longer sure he even possessed the will to live.
Unable to think, unable to feel, and to the best of his knowledge unable to function at all, Tay sat and held his head in his hands.
It was a weird feeling, the emotion that was coursing through him at that point in time, he wasn’t quite able to describe or explain it.
He couldn’t even pinpoint the part of him that felt it the most.
His heart, his soul, his entire being?
Hurt, loss, heartbreak, betrayal?
He had been robbed of all power to think.
The only thing he could rationalize was that he felt kind of as though his soul had left his body, been ripped from his body, massacred and left out to rot.
Mortified, Tay suddenly realized tears were streaming uncontrollably from his eyes.
Somehow, he wasn’t sure how, he managed to wipe them viciously away.
However the same could not be said for the vision of utmost betrayal that he knew would haunt him for the rest of his life.
