Cruel: Searching......

Searching.......

Tay entered the kitchen only to be engulfed in a thick sheet of black smoke.
He coughed and spluttered and tried to make out the faces of the people in the room.
Where the hell was Ike?
It was after midnight and after their curfew.
Their mom and dad were going to spew.
Normally, Tay would have been able to go home early and escape the punishment, leaving Ike to be late home alone, but tonight their dad was their only ride home, they had to be together.
And besides, they were in Seattle not Tulsa and he didn’t know the neighborhood.
He had to find him.
‘Ike! Ike! We gotta go!’ he called but the music was too loud and drowned out his voice.
‘Where the hell is he?’ Tay mumbled to himself pushing past a couple making out on the steps.
After Destiny and Ike had left earlier in the night, Tay had slumped, until a girl called Peta had come and introduced herself to him.
Turned out she was in roughly the same boat as he was and the two of them, complete strangers as they were, sat and talked openly for hours.
It was good to get things off his chest.
‘Ike! For god’s sake! Where the hell are you?’
Tay made his way out into the back patio.
A few guys around his age were grouped around a table.
‘Hey? Have any of you’s seen my brother?’
Some of the guys looked up but no one answered.
Tay heard one guy mutter, ‘Hanson fag. Who the hell invited him?’
Pissed off, he turned from the table, to guffaws and hoots behind him, and started off to search the backyard.
He was getting ready to leave and find his dad by himself when he heard someone call his name from behind him.
He wanted to ignore it, thinking it was probably the guys at the table, but he recognized the voice as female and, hoping it was Destiny, turned round.
It wasn’t Destiny however, and it took him a few seconds to recognize Peta.
‘Tay? Hey Taylor?’
‘Yeah?’
‘Whattcha doin’?’ she asked, walking arm in arm with some guy towards him.
‘Looking for Ike. You wouldn’t have seen him would you?’
‘Ike? Ah, I don’t know....’ Tay noticed she couldn’t seem to meet his gaze.
Tay was ready to press her for more info when the guy spoke up.
‘So, I meet Taylor Hanson. Funny, never been big fan but Peta and some other girls I know are like crazy over you guys! I’m Matt by the way.’
‘Hey.’ Tay looked to Peta and noticed she was grinning from ear to ear.
He was a little surprised, after all she’d told him about some other guy.
Sensing his confusion, she leant in and whispered to him,
‘Matt’s a friend. But I am now totally confused and I have no idea what’s going on. But I guess, at least for tonight I can believe things may go right after all.’ She smiled.
Tay’s heart soared for her.
‘I’m glad.’
