Cruel: Beloved......

Beloved.......

Tay sat and watched Destiny while she chattered on about what she had been doing since she left Tulsa those years ago.
He just sat and watched her.
He still couldn’t believe it was her.
He felt a little weird, just sitting there, watching her, but she didn’t seem to notice.
Occasionally he added his part to the conversation, a ‘hmm’ there and an ‘oh yeah’ here but mainly he could not take his eyes off her.
It was the strangest feeling, the feeling that was washing over Taylor as he sat with her.
A feeling he had never felt before and wasn’t sure he would ever feel again.
It was too hard to describe.
But he knew all he wanted to do was touch her and he was barely able to stop himself.
At one point in the conversation, Tay actually raised his hand and brought it up towards her face but brought it down quickly before he scared her with his quick moves.
The last thing he wanted to do was scare her.
If she felt anything for him at all he didn’t want her to regret it.
So he just continued to watch her.
The next thing he knew, Zac was bounding into the room.

‘Hey guys! Whattcha doin’?’
‘Nothing much.’ Destiny replied, grinning up at Zac.
Zac had always, to her, been the funniest and craziest person she knew, yet also one of the only people she could really open up to.
There had been many a time when Zac and her had shared a secret.
‘So, you weren’t kissing or anything?’ Zac raised an eyebrow.
Destiny laughed.
‘No, why would we be kissing?’
Before Zac had a chance to answer, Tay got up and cleared his throat.
‘I’ll ah, leave you two. I have to go…I have to go….to the bathroom. Yeah, I have to go to the bathroom.’ And he hurried out of the room.
Destiny turned to Zac.
‘What’s up with Tay?’
Zac shrugged, his eyes still on the door.
‘I don’t know. But I wish I did. For days he’s been moping around the place. I think it’s some girl though. He did say something about an angel he’d seen at the concert and then in town somewhere. Can you believe it? An angel?’ Zac could barely hold in the giggles.
Destiny raised her eyebrows.
‘Weird...hey, wait.......’she seemed to lose herself in thought.
‘What?’ Zac asked.
‘Oh, nothing. Just, something Tay said before. No biggie.’
Zac shrugged.
‘Hey? You wanna go check out the balcony? I bet I can spit twice as far as you.’
Destiny laughed.
‘You’re on!’
The two bounded over the bed and out onto the balcony to have spitting competition.

Tay slumped against the door to his room.
Inside he could hear Zac and Destiny chatting happily away.
He heard his name mentioned and then a tremendous racket as Zac and Destiny bounded around the room.
Sighing, Tay reached for the door handle.
Suddenly, Ike was at his side.
‘Hey little bro. I’ve been meaning to talk to you. Whattcha doin’?’
‘Nothing.’
‘Ok....well. Oh, have you talked to Destiny?’
‘Yeah. Of course.’
‘Cool. So she told you about the party her friends are having tomorrow?’
Tay’s eyes widened in surprise.
‘Uh....party?’ then quickly, to avoid letting Ike feel superior, he added,
‘Oh, well, she might have mentioned something about a party...’ his eyes darted around nervously.
Ike knew Destiny had not told Tay and now he was regretting opening his mouth.
Maybe Destiny had purposely NOT told Tay so that she and him could go together, alone.
Tay was standing, looking at Ike expectantly.
‘Oh, oh, well...she just casually mentioned it in conversation....I mean, I don’t think I, I mean we, would be invited anyway.’ He rushed to get out.
‘Yeah. Yeah. And dad wouldn’t let us go anyway....’ Tay added, wringing his hands.
‘Yeah...well, ok. I gotta go. Stuff to do you know...’ Ike started to turn away from his brother.
‘Ike?’
He spun back around. ‘Yeah Tay?’
‘I, uh, I just....it’s so good to see her again, you know?’
Ike’s eyes shifted down from his brothers gaze and his heart ached a little.
‘Yeah, Tay. It is.’ Then quickly before Tay could see the true meaning of his words, he hurried off down the corridor.

He’s not over her.
Ike thought miserably.
And Destiny would surely know that.
And Destiny and Tay used to be so close.
Used to be.
Was the phrase Ike clung to.

When Tay returned to his room, he was surprised to see that Zac and Destiny were missing.
‘Zac?’ he called. ‘Dest?’
‘Out here!’ a voice called from the balcony.
Tay ambled out to the balcony to find Zac retching back ready to propel a huge spit over the side and onto unsuspecting people walking by on the footpath below.
‘Aim for that couple making out just there.’ Destiny ordered her younger and more susceptible to bad influences companion. ‘Oh, hey Tay! Wanna join in?’
Tay responded by hooking back a huge spit of his own just as Zac let his fly.
‘Yessss! Direct hit!’ Zac screamed and threw his arms up in triumph.
The trio high-fived each other as they watched the couple look to the sky and wonder where there little present had come from.
