Sometimes Love Can't Last

by Lady Virgo

Okay, for those of you that don't know any better (or if you've never read any fics for the other series I've written for) this story is yaoi/shonen ai/ (for lack of better terms) boy X boy love. What can I say? I think they're cute together. Anyway, I kinda got this idea from Gorky's Slam Dunk fic (It's good, but I can't remember what it's called) and it has do deal with family honor and stuff. In short, it's going to be angsty. There's cussin' and stuff, so I guess I rate this as a…PG13? Hope you enjoy anyway, any comments or complaints sent to LadyVirgo@hotmail.com, but please be gentle. I can flame just as well as anyone, and I'm sure you don't want me to get ugly on you.

Yukito was worried. He had never heard To-ya-kun like that before. He sounded dismayed, guilty, sad and… something that sounded like… regret, like he had to do something he didn't want to do. Needless to say, the bespectacled youth waited anxiously for his friend to come.

It had been five years since the young brunette moved out from the Kinomoto household and was living on his own, studying at the local medical college and working part-time as an intern at a nearby hospital. The two had talked for a while about moving in together after he finished college, and then they wouldn't have to worry about any roommates or friends finding out about their relationship.

Yukito himself lived in the same house he had since high school, but his parents had moved to Osaka to care for his obasan whose health was failing on her. His job wasn't that far off, but each morning, without fail, Touya was always there to give him a lift on his motorcycle. But recently he's been more and more distant, like something was drawing the man from his side, a nightmare that has kept coming to haunt Yukito’s sleep. However each time, he would wake up to see those midnight-blue eyes starring back at him in concern. Yukito would try to forget his dreams as those strong arms enveloped him, warm lips seeking his own, but it always tugged at the back of his mind, almost as if it was some sort of premonition.

And now… and now Touya calls him up and tells the snow-blonde that he was coming over, needing to talk about something important. But the way he said it, the tone of his voice sent chills up his spine. The front door opened with hardly a sound. The brunette never knocked, he had his own key to the door since the two started getting serious, but there was no friendly call as he entered, no teasing voice or loving words said. Yukito sat ramrod straight in his recliner pale hands folded on his lap.

The blue-eyed youth looked to the other under hooded eyes. "Yuki-chan…"

"A-ah! To-ya-kun! How are you doing today? Would you like something to eat or drink?" He replied cheerfully, a forced smile on his face.

"Yuki-chan, we need to talk."

But he didn't listen. "Isn't it a nice day out? It should be a clear, starry sky tonight, maybe we could go for a stroll after dinner?"

Touya sighed loudly, starring at the pale colored ceiling. "Look, I know this is going to be hard on you but-"

"You know, maybe we could go to the movies. I heard there's a lot of good movies playing at the cinema tonight." Called the blonde from the kitchen.

"Yuki-chan… I think we should break up." He said, bracing himself for whatever tantrum or sobbing or yelling he might endure.

But he didn't prepare for this. "Actually, we could go to the new Italian restaurant that opened up last week." Even though he didn't show any signs of hearing what the other just said, inside, Yukito's heart felt like it's been ripped apart by a knife. To help cover the possible cracks in his voice, he turned the water on in the empty sink, taking clean dishes from the rack and cleaning with harsh scrubbing.

Touya moved to behind Yukito. "Didn't you hear me? I said I want to break up."

<Iie… > he thought, <I'm not hearing this. I'm not gong to think about this. This isn't happening to me. > "The newspaper said that they make the best lasagna in town. I was thinking that we could go there for our anniversary, but I guess we could go tonight."

That's when the blue-eyed youth got mad. He grabbed one of Yukito's shoulders roughly and pushed against the wall. "Dammit, listen to me!" The plate in his grasp slipped, shattering between them with a sharp, melodious sound. The two stood there, an uncomfortable silence hanging heavily over them. Slowly, Touya backed up. "It's over, Yukito."

At the sudden change in formality, it hit the blonde like a punch in the gut. Touya was really serious about this! His lower lip trembled finely, his amber eyes wide with the emotions of shock, deny and questions. He stood up straight, head bowed and jaw and fists clenched so tightly it hurt. "Ah… Nan da?"

That caught him by surprise. "Ano… I guess…" He shrugged.

"Ah." And he turned back to the sink.

"Yuki-cha-Yukito…" Touya reached forward with a hand, wanting so badly to hold the slender young man to his chest. Wishing he didn't have to do this.

But the other just stood there, gripping the side of the sink; arms rigged and shoulder shaking slightly. "Doshite…?" He turned around, tears filling those beautiful eyes, silently slipping down his smooth cheeks and rippling the dishwater when they fell. "Do shita no? What did I do wrong, To-ya-kun? Tell me! I don't want to lose you, tell me what I did wrong!"

"You…" Touya sighed and turned away, walking to the door. "You didn't do anything."

"Than what? You saw some kawaii, genki blonde to chase after?"

That was an insult, he turned to glare at Yukito. "What the hell are you thinking? I don't want one of those!" Then he realized what he just fell in to.

Yukito turned his back, rubbing the heel of his hand over his eyes to wipe away the tears. "Apparently not."

"I… I didn't mean it like that." Touya said lamely. He reached a hand for the doorknob. "Look, it's nothing that you did, so don't worry about it."

"Don't give me that bull shit!" The brunette turned in surprise. Did that actually come out of kind, sweet Yukito? Did he actually make him so upset he actually cursed?

The man in question stood in the kitchen/dinning room doorway, holding his glasses in one hand as he glared at his lover and best friend. His face and eyes were red as he breathed heavily, trying to keep his raging emotions under wrap. The other even thought he imagined Yukito's eyes flash sapphire.

"Fine, do you really want to know?" The blonde nodded ever so slightly. "It… it's my Otousan. He's the reason."

"Nan…?" Yukito looked confused. Since when did Kinomoto-san know about them?

"Hai. He told me that I was the one to carry on the family. I'm the only one that can."

"So you're breaking up with me for your otousan?" Touya nodded slowly. "You still didn't tell me why?"

With another sigh, Touya ran a hand through his ruffled hair. Slowly he turned and walked back into the front room and sat on the couch, patting next to him so Yukito could sit. The latter retook his place at the recliner, opposite the couch.

"Yukito, I love you so much. I don't want to think about waking up without you next to me. I never wanted to hurt you this way."

The other glared darkly. "Then why?"

"You… don't have this problem, you wouldn't understand."

"Try me."

Touya was surprised. Never in his entire life could he remember ever hearing Yukito sounding so cold, his quiet, even voice carring the edge of a razor.

"Otousan talked to me on the phone a few days ago. He told me that Sakura was going out with that Chinese brat and asked me why I haven't found anyone yet. He told me that I should find someone soon, because I am the only one that can keep the family name going. But you… you're otouto is already engaged and your oniisan has two boys of his own. Your name is going to live on, even if we did stay together… but not mine. Sakura is my only sibling, and once she marries, she can't keep our name, only I will. But then I'll have no sons to pass the name on to.

"Otousan lost so much when Okasan died… I can't let him get hurt like that again." He finished, looking anywhere but at Yukito.

"And what about me?" Yukito said, voice gruff and almost growling while his eyes seemed to glow an eerie blue. "You would do so much for him when you pledged yourself to me. Haven't you ever considered how I would feel? Are you really that self-centered? I’ve never been in love with anyone before because you're the only one I _can_ love. Don't you understand that? If I can't be with you, I can't be with anyone. Not after all we've been through, all I gave you. Doesn't my heart mean anything to you? My virginity, my soul?"

"You don't understand. I love you more than anyone, and I'll still love you. Those nights when we can't be together, all I can think about is you; all I dream about is you. Knowing that you've given me everything someone can… it's made me love you all the more." He knelt in front of the blonde, taking his hands in his own, pressing his face against the other's knees and caressing the soft, smooth skin. "I love you so much it hurts… I don't ever want to leave you, but I have no choice. I doubt that I'll ever be able to find someone else because you're the only one for me. Because you're the only one like you, and I'll never be able to feel the same because… you're so perfect, Yukito… so beautiful…"

The clouds thickened and traveled slowly in the sky, but the sun still cast a rainbow within Yukito's tears. He quickly stood up and turned around. "Touya… please leave."

His heart was breaking inside. All he wanted to do was hold Yukito in a tight embrace for eternity, feel the hot breath on his neck, their skin melding together in a heated dance, but all he could do was sit there, a cauldron of conflicting emotions. "Yukito…"

"Now!" The blonde stiffly shouted, sniffling as his voice shook with emotions that threatened to overwhelm, then said quietly. "Onegai, Touya… leave me alone…"

Without anything left to say Touya stood, trying uncomfortably to say something that would help ease Yukito's pain. But how could he do that when nothing he could say would even ease his own? The brunette walked out the door and never looked back. Because he knew that if he did, he would see his lover lift his head to the sky, tears trickling down his cheeks.

Okay, that's done now. I hope you all liked it, if not, I'm sorry. There's no pleasing everyone. And if anyone flames me for not warning you about it being cursing and angsty and yaoi READ THE TOP PEOPLE! Anyway, this show or the characters don't belong to me, but to CLAMP (may the four never be forgotten). So please don't sue. Anyway, once again, I hope you liked it. And something for those that have no idea what the Japanese words mean:

Obasan-Grandmother

Ah-Oh (roughly translated)

Iie-No, negative, opposite of yes

Nan da?-Is that all? (Basically)

Ano-Um

Doshite?-Why?

Do shita no?-What happened?

Kawaii-Cute

Genki-Cheerful

Otousan-Father

Nan?-What?

Hai-Agreeing, yes, opposite of no

Otouto-Younger brother

Oniisan-Older brother

Okasan-Mother

Onegai-Please

That's all for now! You know, reading back over it… it's not as angsty as I first thought. Not even halfway the saddest thing I ever wrote. Oh well, it was still sad though. I really like the two together; they're really cute and just made for each other! Again, please let me now what you think. See ya!
