Even though I love all tigers, there is a special place in my heart for my "Siberian Baby", Yevgeny. I first looked into the The Siberian Tiger Project about two years ago and decided to sponser a new baby tiger named "Monya". However, a few months later I received a newsletter saying Monya had been shot by poachers, skinned, and left in a pitiful heap, frozen in the snow. This only made me more determined to help save the tigers. I sent in more money to sponser a one year old male tiger called "Yevgeny". This little cub had gotten off to an interesting start in the program. On November 10 1993, when Geny was to be radio-collared, CNN was present to film every move. The event ran smoothly and young Geny disappeared into the forests of Russia like so many tigers before him. Now Geny is about 4 years old, and I am proud to say that he has managed to avoid the perils of tiger adolescence. He has just recently established himself in a homerange, and he is growing up strong and efficient. He will be a model tiger.

Updates on Yevgeny

Spring 98:
Geny has his hands (paws) full this winter, keeping track of new tigers in his territory. First, a radio-collared young tigress took up residence in his home range, so Geny spent a lot of time keeping track of her. Then, an uncollared tiger wandered into the same area, and stayed about a week, so Geny had some competition in his endeavors. Finally, another female tiger showed up, also for about one week. Geny must have been frantic!

Winter 97:
Since Katia and her cubs have started moving, Geny has been spending more time near them. He does, however, continue to use the outskirts of his home range more often than usual. Once we even located him near the outskirts of a town called Terney. We kept a close eye on him at the time, but even though he walked within 50 meters of several cows and goats, he did not cause any trouble.

Fall 97:
In all probability, Geny is the father of Katrina's new cubs. He kept his distance from Katrina's den during the first few months though, remaining instead in an area on the outer fringes of their overlapping territories. Such behavior may help Katrina, by leaving the prey nearest her den site untouched, and thus making hunting easier for the nursing mother. Geny did finally visit Katrina's den in August, meeting his cubs for the first time.

Summer 97:
Geny is healthy, and still traveling within his home territory. Interestingly, in early summer, biologists found the remains of an elk he had shared with an "un-collared" female, a tiger that may occupy the area south of Geny's range. Although Katrina and her cub are rarely located together anymore, Geny still spends time with both tigers independently.
