Where is the bacteria that causes meningococcal and pneumococcal found?

The bacteria can be found in the back of the nose and throat (nasopharynx), or the upper respiratory tract.


This is a photomicrograph of the organism that causes pneumococcal pneumonia. The bacteria are round, but join together to form chains. Frequently, these join together to form pairs and are called diplococci; the prefix di means two.


Meningococcemia is a life-threatening infection that occurs when the bacteria, Neisseria meningitidis, invades the blood stream.
