What is meningococcal meningitis?
Meningococcal meningitis is an infection caused by meningococcal bacterium,
which causes inflammation of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord.
What are the symptoms?
rash, high fever, severe headache, nausea and vomiting, stiff neck,
sensitivity to light, mental status changes
What are the treatments?
Antimicrobial therapy must be started immediately. Penicillin is prescribed
for this disease. Intravenous mannitol can be used to treat the
complications.
What are the complications?
arthritis, shock, increased intracerebral pressure, deafness, paralysis of
various muscles, mental retardation.
Prevention
Preventive measures, such as washing your hands before and after changing a
diaper or using the bathroom, and practicing other good hygiene habits should
be implemented. Vaccines are effective for the control of epidemics.
Meningococcal meningitis is now the biggest killer of children aged under four but mass vaccination may reduce that threat.
