Rainforest Action Network Rainforest Action Network (RAN), founded in 1985, is a non-profit volunteer and member-based grassroots organization dedicated to protecting the world's rainforests and upholding the rights of native forest-dwelling people. RAN has 30,000 members and coordinates its activities with environmental and human rights organizations around the world.


Human Rights Watch Human Rights Watch is the largest human rights organization based in the United States. Human Rights Watch researchers conduct fact-finding investigations into human rights abuses in all regions of the world. Human Rights Watch then publishes those findings in dozens of books and reports every year, generating extensive coverage in local and international media.


The Sierra Club is a nonprofit member-supported,public interest organization that promotes conservation of the natural environment by influencing public policy decisions--legislative, administrative, legal, and electoral.


Known worldwide by its panda logo, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is dedicated to protecting the world's wildlife and wildlands. The largest privately supported international conservation organization in the world, WWF has sponsored more than 2,000 projects in 116 countries and has more than 1 million members in the U.S. alone. WWF directs its conservation efforts toward three global goals: protecting endangered spaces, saving endangered species, and addressing global threats. From working to save the giant panda, tiger, and rhino to helping establish and manage parks and reserves worldwide, WWF has been a conservation leader for more than 36 years.


Green Peace

Greenpeace was conceived in 1971 when members of the Don't Make A Wave Committee in Vancouver, Canada, renamed their organization the better to proclaim their purpose: to create a green and peaceful world. Greenpeace today adheres to the same principle that led 12 people to sail a small boat into the US atomic test zone off Amchitka in Alaska in 1971: that determined individuals can alter the actions and purposes of even the most powerful by 'bearing witness', that is, by drawing attention to an abuse of the environment through their unwavering presence at the scene, whatever the risk.

Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres) is a private, nonprofit, international humanitarian organization, whose objective is to provide medical relief to populations in crisis. The organization operates independently of all governments, institutions, political, economic, or religious influences. It depends on volunteer health professionals in fulfilling its mission. Largely supported by private donors, the organization is able to maintain great flexibility and total independence in its choice of operations. Doctors Without Borders was established in 1971 by a group of physicians determined to offer emergency assistance wherever wars and man-made disasters occur.

World Watch Worldwatch is a nonprofit public policy research organization dedicated to informing policymakers and the public about emerging global problems and trends and the complex links between the world economy and its environmental support systems.

Created in 1982, WRI is dedicated to helping governments and private organizations of all types cope with environmental, resource, and development challenges of global significance. The mission of World Resources Institute (WRI) is to move human society to live in ways that protect the Earth's environment and its capacity to provide for the needs and aspirations of current and future generations.

Welcome to the Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center's (SEDAC) World Wide Web site. CIESIN, the Center for International Earth Science Information Network at Columbia University, has been designated by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to operate and maintain SEDAC, one of the data centers in the Earth Observing Data and Information System (EOSDIS). SEDAC's mission is to develop and deliver information products and services that integrate social and natural science data in ways useful for decision making.
