Doilies - Page 1

I have tried to give pattern sources as completely as I can with each project so that if you want to, you can find the pattern to make it yourself. Please do not write asking for patterns. I regret that I cannot fill those requests.

I made this doily for my grandma using DMC Cebelia #10 thread in white, and America's Best rayon crochet thread in shaded pastels. The pattern is called, "Back to Basics," and it is from the May 1998/#63 issue of Decorative Crochet magazine. Click here for a close-up scan of the doily.

I have made a couple of these little "doilies" for small gifts. It is actually a coaster from Magic Crochet #113, April 1998. It is the "Egg Warmer Mat," and it is intended to go under an egg cup (it also has a little "hat" to match for on top of the egg!). The pattern instructs you to use #40 thread for a finished size of 4 1/2" in diameter, but I used ecru DMC Cebelia in #10 for a 7 inch diameter little doily.

I was the lucky pattern tester for this lovely design by Ellen Fentress. The pattern can be found at the Crochet Musings website. It is the Heart Wedding Filet Sampler. I used Aunt Lydia's thread in ecru.

This doily comes from the House of White Birches' hardcover book, "Heirloom Doilies." (Copyright 1995, ISBN 1-882138-11-2) It is my first pineapple doily, and the pattern name is "Easy Pineapple Doily." I made this with #818 pink DMC Brilliant thread. It doesn't look pink in the picture, but it's actually a pretty pale shade. This brand of thread is no longer being made, so be sure to buy it when you find it. I gave this to my mother-in-law.

This doily is called "English Daisy." It is from Magic Crochet magazine, December 1997, issue #111. It is the very first doily I made using a symbol (instead of written) pattern, and it is also my first doily using smaller, #20 thread. I used DMC Cebelia thread in ecru. After getting over my initial fear of symbols, I realized that I really do prefer this type of pattern now! I find it much easier to follow than written instructions. Click here for a close-up scan of the doily.

The very first doily I ever made is the Large Berka Shells Doily from Coats & Clark Book #356, Article J.12 "Timeless Doilies to Crochet." I used South Maid #10 thread in Pastels. Even though my doily turned out smaller than it should have, it was pretty easy to do and I thought it wasn't bad for a first attempt. This is a great little book for beginners. It has 6 beautiful doily designs, all at the beginner - intermediate level.

The infamous "Kitty Talk" Doily. My picture of this scanned in rather poorly, but I do have another picture of it done in ecru that is better. (Click on ecru to see it!) I made a set of two blue ones for our living room's end tables. "Kitty Talk" comes from American School of Needlework's book #1218 called "Pretty Doilies." The blue ones were made using DMC Cebelia thread in #799 blue. The two ecru ones went to the Shawano County Humane Society's fundraiser banquet, and they were made with DMC Baroque thread.
