Lightning struck a large pine tree and has spread to the woods---Hope,ME woods firekeeps area firefighters busy.--Woods fire in Otis,Maine about 3 miles off the West Shore Rd burned about 3 acres and destroyed a grapple skidder, a delimber and a feller buncher.

About 3 acres involved and was sparked by an old lightning strike.-Smaller fires were reported in Rochester, Acworth and Rochester,NH. Also fires in Sanford,Gorham, Kittery and Bowdoin,ME were keeping crews busy as conditions continue to become seriously dry.

  • AUGUST 18,1999-Woods Fire in York,ME--remotely burning off the Woodbridge Rd behind the old Central Maine Power building. Crews could only get hand tools to the scene of the that was caused by a lightning strike from the day before.
  • SEPTEMBER 1,1999-Woods Fire in Waterboro,ME--remotely burning off the Middle Rd on the side of Ossipee Mt. The fire was spotted by the Ossipee Hill fire tower with help from Green Mt & Mt.Agamenticus towers. Extensive mutual aid was called with additional assistance from the Wildland Firefighters of York County, the York County Emergency Management Agency, Southern Maine Fire Notification personel and Red Cross Disaster refreshment van. This one was caused from a week old lighting strike! Other woods fires in Corninna,ME along the Sebasticook River burned 2 acres Portsmouth,NH (spotted by Agamenticus fire tower) & Rumney,NH on Rattlesnake Mountain kept crews busy. The Southern Maine area is becoming dangerously dry due to lack of rain for an extended period of time.
  • SEPTEMBER 2,1999-Woods Fire in Waterboro,ME--on the side of Ossipee Hill continues to burn in the ground and requiring extensive hand tool work today. Durham,ME-woods fire on the Davis Road requiring extensive mutual aid and water drops--Bucksport,ME has a woods fire on the East Bucksport Rd with choppers dropping water, 3 acres burned in Great Pond Township,ME and requiring lots of digging out hot spots.
  • SEPTEMBER 3,1999-Woods Fire in Bucksport,ME--on the East Bucksport Rd is continuing to burn in the ground and requiring extensive hand tool work today from many area fire departments. Small woods fire in Nottingham,NH off the Stage Rd brought crews to work this morning and in West Paris,MEoff Oxford St., a woods fire is burning with several surrounding towns responding to assist.Bowtown Township,ME (NW of Caratunk) just north of Otter Pond Mt. Large woods fire burning-crews assembling at Caratunk. Woods fire in Pownal,MEoff the Chadsey Rd -M/A from surrounding towns responding. The Agamenticus fire tower has spotted a woods fire behind the landfill in Wells,ME, companies trying to gain control.Woods fire in Newport,MEon the Rutland Rd has crews from several towns working as well as a chopper. A woods fire in Milford,ME on the Old County is requiring the request for a chopper and additional manpower.
  • SEPTEMBER 4,1999-Woods Fire in North Penobscot,ME--off Rt.15 is burning and requiring extensive hand tool work today from many area fire departments. Small woods fire in Enfield,NH on top of Whaleback Mt by the Ski area-Fire destroyed a building at the top.Windham,MEoff Rt.302 near Mt.Hunger, a woods fire has burned 4 acres with several surrounding towns responding as did a MFS Chopper for water drops. Firefighters in Old Orchard Beach,ME are working a woods fire on an island near Goosefare Brook.
