A Pizza the Action,
ARO Starts New Campaign For Vegan Pizza
by ParkStRanger@aol.com
I miss pizza. I miss the convenience of
having home delivery of hot greasy pizza. Back when I was a lacto
vegetarian, it wasn't so hard to talk my coworkers into ordering an all veggie
pizza to be delivered to our workplace. But being a vegan really cuts
down my options for this guilty pleasure. I either make one myself, which
rarely happens, or I rely on the one place in town that makes an interesting
vegan pizza. Even their pizza, while tasty with unusual vegetables like
broccoli and zucchini, seems to be incomplete without that ingredient that
really makes a pizza a pizza, cheese.
Being discriminating and sophisticated consumers, we vegans are more careful
about what we put in our mouths than the typical omnivore. We don't care
to ingest condensed moldy mammary fluids from another species. Nor do we
want the other concentrated things that come with it, the hormones, the
pesticides, herbicides and other lifeformicides. And we don't want to
support the veal industry which is a direct result of impregnating dairy cows
to make them produce milk.
But cheese in dips, sauces, enchiladas, chile rellenos, chile con queso,
cheddar cheese with a piece of apple pie, bleu cheese on a slice of
apple....ahhh... the memories...and that incredible Italian-American creation -
the pizza,...sigh... of which I have fond memories associated with when I was
in college, learning how to be an animal rights advocate, those long nights
with vegetarian pizza and beer and other stimulants as we studied for the next
day's ....but I digress, ah...the power of cheese !
At a recent Animal Rights Online staff meeting, we decided to promote a new
campaign, Vegan Pizza at Pizza Hut
So we are asking all our readers to click on this page which leads to Pizza Hut

"Gee, it would be nice to be able to get a vegan pizza," with a vegan
cheese formula like the ones used by VeganRella or Earthkind, or maybe you
could come up with a formula of your own....(Shh....don't you all use the word
"formula" or they will figure out that this is a campaign....Shhh.)

Tell them that there is a market waiting for a vegan pizza, and how they could
be the leader. And that they shouldn't pass up this opportunity because
another chain could latch onto the idea and make a fortune. Vegetarians
become Vegans. And We Want Pizza Too.
That's why we at Animal
Rights Online say
Let's all go to
PIZZA HUT

Free Business Card Offers
From Jim Willis & Nicole Valentin-Willis
Tiergarten Sanctuary Trust
jwillis@bellatlantic.net
Many
Rescues and rescuers short on funds might like to take advantage of the various
free business cards offers on the web, such as from www.vistaprint.com
or www.iprint.com. (The first currently has the offer for color cards,
the latter occasionally as a promotional offer for black & white cards. iprint
currently has a self-inking return address stamp or 300 return address labels
for $2.99.) Usually, you pay only for shipping for 250 cards, about $5.
Even if you don't need business cards for yourself, consider having some done
with local contact information about low-cost spay/neuter programs in your
area, or other animal-related programs. They are easy to keep in wallet or
purse to pass out to the public. (Or order a self-inking stamp with a
spay/neuter message!) Several members of a group can place individual orders
with the same printed message so that you have a quantity of cards on hand.

Avon Stops Funding
Animal Research for its Breast Cancer Crusade
From AAVSONLINE@aol.com
Jenkintown,
PA – The American Anti-Vivisection Society (AAVS) is very pleased to announce
that Avon, an international cosmetic manufacturer, has stated it will no longer
fund animal-based research as part of its Breast Cancer Crusade. AAVS
applauds Avon for implementing a compassionate and ethical policy that
symbolizes its well-respected progressive reputation.
In a letter to AAVS, Avon stated, "As of November 2, 2001, the official
policy of the Avon Products Foundation is that no new Avon Breast Cancer
Crusade funds will be used to support breast cancer research projects involving
the use of animals." AAVS, along with other animal advocacy groups,
initiated a letter writing campaign this past fall to persuade Avon to stop
funding animal research through its Crusade. "The Avon Breast Cancer
Crusade is a wonderful project," says AAVS Executive Director Tina
Nelson. "And now it sets a precedent that an effective, non-animal
research based foundation can not only give supportive care and educate the
general public, but can also aid in the advancement of fighting breast
cancer." The Avon Breast Cancer Crusade now joins a growing list of
health charity organizations that do not fund animal research.
Earlier this year, a coalition of animal advocacy groups, which includes AAVS
and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, created the Humane Seal
of Approval, the highest level of assurance that a charity does not fund animal
research. The United Cancer Research Society, the Lymphoma Foundation of
America, and the Gilda Radner Familial Ovarian Cancer Registry have all signed
onto the Humane Charity Seal of Approval, and AAVS is hopeful that Avon will
adopt the Seal as well.
Additionally, this is not the first time that Avon has been in the forefront of
corporations that implement socially mindful policies. In 1989, Avon
became the first major cosmetics company to end the use of animals in
evaluating the safety of its products and ingredients.
The American Anti-Vivisection Society (AAVS) is a non-profit animal advocacy
and educational organization dedicated to ending experiments on animals in
research, testing, and education. Founded in 1883, AAVS is the oldest
organization in the United States dedicated to eliminating experiments on
animals. AAVS pursues its objectives through legal and effective
advocacy, education, and development of alternative methods. The
Alternatives Research & Development Foundation, an AAVS affiliate, was
founded in 1994 to support the development and use of alternatives to
laboratory animals through education and funding of related research projects.

Kabul's Lion, Still King of the
Beasts
But Future Uncertain for Animals at Kabul Zoo
By Kevin Sites - NBC NEWS
http://www.msnbc.com/news/662137.asp
KABUL, Afghanistan, Nov. 23. Though his roar is more of
a yawn these days, it was not so long ago when this lion, Marjan, used to be
the king of Kabul's urban jungle. A mujahedeen fighter who had survived combat
with the Soviet Red Army was not so lucky when he jumped into the lion's den to
tease the beast. Marjan promptly ate him.
THE NEXT DAY, says zookeeper Sheragha Omar, "A family member threw a hand
grenade into the cage. When Marjan pounced on it thinking it was food, he lost
one eye and 95 percent of his sight in the other."
But Marjan is not the only casualty in Afghanistan's unending wars and civil
strife.
During the vicious factional power fights from 1992 to 1995, a sadistic soldier
killed the Zoo's elephant with a rocket-propelled grenade. Other animals were
turned into meals for hungry fighters.
An Afghan bear paces in his cage. His snout is red, raw and swollen. Zoo
officials say Taliban visitors would tease the bear by holding out food, then
smacked him on the nose with sticks when he reached for it.
THE KORAN'S ANIMALS
In a place that used to have 39 species of animals. Now there are just 17.
The only reason it is still open at all is because of zookeeper Omar, who like
Marjan, doesn't give up very easily. When the repressive Taliban regime wanted
to shut the zoo down, Omar fought back. He went to the faculty of Islamic
studies at the University of Kabul.
"They wrote down everything in the Koran that referred to animals and the
prophet Mohammed," says Omar. "I collected them all and presented
them to the ministry of justice."
Faced with evidence that the Prophet indeed kept pets, the Taliban allowed Omar
to keep the zoo open. Despite the zoo's sorry state, crumbling infrastructure
and malnourished animals, attendance is up. And since the Taliban fled the
capital, the number of visitors to the zoo has doubled to 200 a day.
Mohammed Rafi, an unemployed 18-year-old, comes here every week to pass the
time. He says Marjan, the one-eyed lion, is still his favorite draw.
"It's stronger than any other animal in the world," says Rafi.
"Yes, it's the king of animals in the world."
KING OF THE BEASTS
But this king, like the other animals here, still faces an uncertain
future.
There's very little food to feed the animals, the zoo's staff of eleven haven't
been paid since July, and with cold weather approaching there's no money left
to prepare the animals' cages for winter.
Omar says the Northern Alliance is providing some food and medicine for the
zoo, but it's not enough. Still, despite the difficulties, he loves Marjan and
all the animals too much to give up now. He says he will keep up the fight as
long as Marjan does, living up to the words posted on a sign outside the zoo,
"God created animals. People must be good to them."

Barbaric Animal Pound in
Gatesville, Texas
by Jerry Layne - JLayne3636@aol.com
Forty-four
miles from Waco, Texas is the small, lovely town of Gatesville, Texas.
About 10 miles outside the city limits of Gatesville, isolated off a county
road, behind a locked gate and nowhere to be seen is the city's 'Animal Pound.'
Twice in the last several months I have driven from my home in Waco to this
unsanitized 'animal pound.' Over the past 14 years I have seen and fought
hard against animal shelters and pounds that give nothing but misery and
suffering to animals.
ANIMALS RIGHTS ONLINE and so many reader's three years ago greatly assisted my
organization, ANIMALS HAVE HEARTS, TOO! in a 3 months battle against the City
of Abilene, Texas and their use of a gas chamber where they bunched-up many
animals at one time, shoved them in the gas chamber, pushed the button and
walked away from the ghastly nightmare. We won a victory there by emails,
letters, facsimiles to various members of the City of Abilene and they changed
to lethal injection.
Now, we are requesting your assistance again. This small town has set-up
a small bricked-in confinement for a gas chamber. When shut, it is
complete darkness inside (pictures are available that I and other individuals
took of the chamber and the animal pound where feces and filth are
everywhere/also, located around the animal pound-empty shotgun shells) and the
small brick chamber is hooked-up to an old City of Gatesville police car with it's
tires taken off and a hose is hooked-up to it's exhaust pipe directly
attached to the gas chamber.
Also, in one picture the gas pedal has a tree-stick shoved against it and the car
seat so no individual has to push the gas pedal to maintain pressure for the
gas fumes to move to the gas chamber.
It is a haunting sight to realize what the dogs, puppies, cats and kittens must
go through. All alone, pushed into this darkness then very slowly gassed
to death.
This is unacceptable to all of us and we need your assistance in writing to
place people and the city on notice.
Please tell the below list of individuals that a gas chamber of any kind is
unacceptable and causes great suffering and must be dismantled. Unwanted
animals are entitled to basic protections under the Texas State Law. Tell them
to stop permitting pound/city employees to continue killing animals by
gassing. We realize this is a small town; but other small towns know it
is a horrible action to gas animals and instead, use lethal injection--even in
a small community there must be given to the animals respect and dignity in the
time of their deaths!
It is well-known that animals killed in gas chambers especially homemade,
car exhaust to chamber is a wrenching way to die. The animals often
scream in panic, they struggle for air and the exhaust gas horribly irritates
their eyes and noses.
Gassing animals is an extremely cruel and inhumane method of euthanasia;
if you can even call gassing euthanasia. We resonate with all of
creation, and whatever harm or brutality is done to these innocents without
voices affects us all, one way or the other.
All of us are appalled by the way this small town has hidden the 'animal pound'
way away from civilization and are killing the unwanted animals by CARBON
MONOXIDE POISONING...through the exhaust of a vehicle!
Virtually every major animal protection organization in the United States, as
well as the AMERICAN VETERINARY MEDICAL ASSOCIATION, advocates strongly
"intravenous injection of sodium pentobarbital" as the euthanasia
method of choice and it is our belief we can offer the veterinary community
assistance in teaching the proper way to use lethal injection.
The above is 'some-type' of message your reader's can send; ending with,
"Thank you for your time and urgent decision to stop using the gas
chamber."
Please forward a carbon copy (CC) to <JLayne3636@aol.com> as this was
very helpful in the Abilene, Texas animal shelter gas chamber case. Such
monitoring of the mail is also being done with the current cat cruelty case
here in Waco, the QUESO cat case and we have monitored over 4,000 messages to
city council members, Baylor University, the DA and etc.
*Also, in your messages; please inform the CONTACTS that sanitation and better
protection from the weather elements is a priority. As the 'pound' uses
old, rusty oil drums for 'housing' of individual animals; which give no shelter
or comfort whatsoever to the animals.

The Gatesville 'animal pound' is a gruesome sight; it, to me is like ...
'entering the gates of hell.' When the City is made respectfully aware of
such atrocious conditions it is my belief they will change everything at
their 'city pound,' as everything is unacceptable - because everything is
done behind closed doors!

Sheepskin,

A sheepskin is not a sign

A pigskin is not a sign

A deerskin is not a sign
