Fur
Free Friday
Traditionally,
the day after Thanksgiving is the busiest shopping day of the year. It's
no coincidence that it is also Fur Free Friday. What better time to
peaceably demonstrate our concern for fur-bearing animals? Each year more
than 40 million animals are killed for fashion. Whether used as a full-length
coat or simple trim, or sometimes even things as foolish as wearing apparel for
our companion animals or coats for Barbie dolls, fur represents senseless pain
and suffering. With beautiful faux fur alternatives widely available,
there is no need to torture and kill animals to make a fashion statement.
Animals caught in traps or snares may suffer for days before dying of exposure,
exhaustion or strangulation. In addition to the desired fur-bearing animals,
trappers also catch non-target animals including deer, birds, squirrels,
endangered species, and companion cats and dogs. What a strange world this is
where cats and dogs are accidentally caught and mutilated in traps so that
other cats and dogs can have real fur toys and outfits. Farm-raised fur
comes from animals kept in tiny, filthy cages deprived of adequate protection
from the elements. There are no U.S. laws regulating how animals on fur farms
are to be housed or killed. The techniques used to kill animals on fur farms
includes neck snapping, anal electrocution, and crude carbon monoxide or
dioxide "gas chambers" that are notorious for prolonging the death of
animals and for their ineffectiveness, allowing animals to regain consciousness
while being skinned.
There is nothing fashionable about cruelty to animals.

A
Trapper's True Story
by James Strecker
I once was a trapper
and where I made footsteps
I echoed a shadow of blood.
I gripped every season with
my bare hands and did what I
had to do, sometimes more,
though I knew I would die
and lie naked underground,
my skin like every winter's ice.
One day, as I checked my
lines, I walked into a clearing
where morning unveiled amazing
pure light. I knew myself more
than alive, and that very instant
I saw the mother fox in my trap.
She'd been nursing her kits, four
of them, while my jagged voice
cut into her flesh to the bone;
she'd been crazy with fear and pain,
I could tell, for there was much
blood spattered all around.
And as I walked toward the vixen,
she raised her head to watch me
come through the clearing. And she
gently picked up each one of her
young by the neck, one at a time,
and lay it close to her breath
and licked the milk from its face,
and snapped its neck. She did that
to all four before I could reach her.
And as she watched me over her
newly born, over her dead she had
saved from my hands, I knew
I would never trap again. And I
never have, though I killed her
with one bullet as she lay back
waiting to die. I buried the mother
and her fur, and tonight, in the
warming nighttime of spring I wonder
if ever I'll sleep until morning again.
James Strecker is the author and/or editor
of fourteen books, including Black on jazz and Pas de Vingt on ballet, both
with artist Harold Town, Routes with photographer Bill Smith, and Recipes for
Flesh on animal rights. Widely published as a poet, freelance writer and
photographer, he is also Professor of English at Sheridan College, an Intensive
Journal Consultant, a publisher, a graphoanalyst, and recipient of the Hamilton
Arts Awards for 1992. A Trapper's True Story is taken from Strecker's
collection, Echosystem, which was published in 1993 by Mini Mocho Press
(Jackson Station, P.O. Box 57424, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, L8P 4X2)

Memorable Quote
A Thanksgiving Prayer
by ParkStRanger@aol.com
Oh, Creator of the Universe...
Whenever we see birds flying in the sky,
we are thankful they are there.
Whenever we see fish swimming in the waters,
we are thankful they are there.
Whenever we see deer or squirrels or rabbits in the woods
we are thankful they are there, and not here on our dinner tables.
Amen
The staff
at Animal Rights Online wishes you and yours a Happy Vegan Thanksgiving, and
after the prayer above, we hope you all get to sit down and relax with a cup of
ParkStRanger's ...............
Egglessnogless
1 pkg. Mori-Nu low fat firm tofu
1 cup vanilla soy, rice or almond milk
1/4 cup vegan sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon rum extract
1/8 tsp. ground turmeric
1/8 tsp. ground nutmeg
Here is a veganized version of a traditional holidays drink, and a perfect
phony: no eggs, no dairy, no booze. I prefer not to use white sugar since
it is filtered through animal bone charcoal. Slightly darker sugars like
Florida Crystals brand and turbinado sugars are not filtered this way.
With the holidays coming we will all be eating more sweet foods than
usual. Here is a great page from Vegsource.com written by Joanne
Stepaniak about sugar.

Veganism with Joanne Stepaniak

If, like me, you find this recipe too phony,
forget the rum extract and add several shots of bourbon. Happy Holidays !
