Celebrate Vegetarianism!
by Corrynthia@aol.com

Did you know that October is Vegetarian Awareness Month?  How about that Sunday, October 1 is World Vegetarian Day? Or that Monday, October 2 is World Farm Animals Day, celebrated this year on the 125th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi?  How do YOU plan on celebrating these events?

I know what I am going to be doing.

Of late, THE hot topic for discussion at my place of employment has been osteoporosis.  Women gather around my desk and share stories.  One woman even retired early because of the excruciating pain in her back caused by brittle bones and a fractured and compacted spine. "Oh yes," she began, "It's awful!  I take so-and-so medicine, and one of its side effects is it draws calcium from my bones."  And so her doctor prescribed yet another medicine to replace the lost calcium.  Pills, tablets, and liquids.  They all want a quick fix to their problem!

They all think that along with popping pills that guzzling more milk, eating more cheese, consuming more yogurt and cottage cheese is the answer.  I shake my head and sigh heavily.  If only they knew. I try to tell them, but they look at me as if I were from another planet.

Today I hit on a plan!  I am going to use World Vegetarian Day as an opportunity to educate them about plant sources of calcium.  Calcium that does not come along with the added baggage of fat, cholesterol, antibiotics and hormones.  Calcium that is not delivered via the milk of another species.  I want to empower these women with an arsenal of calcium-rich plant choices to combat their osteoporosis.

If you need reasons why humans shouldn't drink cow's milk, read the following article by Robert Cohen. Be sure to visit his website too.  Also, there is a link to a part of the Vegetarian Resource Group webpage that is all about CALCIUM.  Follow it and read it.  You can even check out other areas of the VRG! Make a couple of the calcium-rich recipes.  Print out the table of the calcium content of selected foods -- make copies and take them to work.  Hand them out with the food samples.  Get the word out that cow's milk is meant for baby cows, who grow to weigh 300 pounds in just one year. Let people know that there are a lot of plant sources of calcium. Make your goal be to just make them aware. Give the women -- the people -- you care about in your life this gift for World Vegetarian Day at work on Monday (World Farm Animals Day) during Vegetarian Awareness Month.

Milk Consumption Nosedives!
by Robert Cohen - i4crob@idt.net

Every day, thousands of people read this newsletter.  Every day, thousands of people send and re-send evidence containing the negative aspects of milk to friends and family members.

Every day, I am heard on radio shows, and occasionally get an article published in a newspaper or magazine.  I frequently lecture and often appear on television shows.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) and the Dairy Education Board (DEB) together act as the antidotes to $500 million dollars worth of dairy brainwashing efforts by empowering Americans to explore a diet that does not include cow's milk products.

Every little bit helps to send a message to all people:

COW'S MILK DOES NOT DO THE BODY ANY GOOD.

Yesterday, the September issue of THE MILKWEED, a pro-dairy newsletter/journal, arrived in my mailbox.

The headline of Issue No. 254:

"FLUID SALES NOSEDIVE DESPITE BIGGEST PROMOTION"
(THE MILKWEED:  P.O. Box 10, Brooklyn, Wisconsin 53521
        $35 per year [12 issues])

That's right!  The latest data from the USDA suggests that April-June 2000 milk sales declined 2.3%.  Since the population of the United States continues to grow (at a rate of 0.8% per year), fluid milk sales must also increase to maintain the same rate of growth.

Data reveal that actual fluid milk consumption rates declined by 3.4% from January to June 2000.  The actual April data were so horrible (suggesting a 6.6% decline) that USDA temporarily stopped reporting the data (according to The MILKWEED).

What has been the response of the dairy industry?

They are spending an unprecedented amount of money marketing milk mustache ads. Wherever I appear, the dairy industry does damage control by placing more radio, television, and print ads.  Have you noticed how hard they are trying?  It's just not working.

Milk prices continue to fall on the wholesale level, although retail milk prices have not dropped.  There is now a government (GAO) investigation into why.  With falling prices, and falling consumption, dairy farmers continue to produce more milk.  They do so by breeding more cows and injecting their livestock with genetically engineered hormones, which also increases milk production.

Americans have learned not to drink their pus with hormones and glue.  Not only is the thought of drinking bovine body fluids offensive to one's sensibilities, but it just happens to taste awful.  Kids know this, and are now getting the TRUTH via the Internet.

We have been planting the seeds of the destruction of an industry, which continues to brainwash Americans with their milk myths.

Every sip of milk contains virus, pus, bacteria, powerful growth hormones, allergenic proteins, antibiotics, pesticides, fat, cholesterol, and dioxins.

Eighty percent of milk protein is casein, the same glue used to hold a label to a bottle of beer.  There are 59 different hormones in every sip of milk.  FDA allows 750 million pus cells per liter of milk.

MY MANTRA (Repeat after me) Pus with hormones and glue...pus with hormones and glue...pus with hormones and glue...

I Met An Angel Today
by Lisa Black - LABlack@WhitneyTX.net
Lake Whitney Humane Society

The angel I met today walks this earth as a man.  At 4:15 p.m. on an extremely busy freeway with rush hour getting into full swing and cars whizzing by, I saw a man standing in the break down lane in the center with a dog between his feet.  I stopped to see if I could offer any assistance as I have vet tech experience.  The man told me he had seen the dog running along the breakdown lane and stopped to try and capture him.  The man chased him a good distance before he could capture the dog.  The dog was terrified and had nipped at the man out of fear.  By the time I stopped, the dog seemed to trust the man more and we were able to read the tags on the dog's collar.......yes the dog was wearing a collar with tags, and one of the tags had the dogs name, telephone number and city on it!!!

Rusty, the dog, did not seem to have been injured, just a little dirty with some burrs in his coat.  The man pulled out his cell phone and immediately called the number on the tags.  He got an answering machine and left a message.  Then this man picked the dog up to take him back to his truck.  I drove the man to his truck as he had chased Rusty a long distance along the freeway to help save him.

What moved me about this situation is that this man pulled off an extremely busy freeway to try and help this dog that would surely have been hit and killed by a vehicle.  This man thought nothing about doing this!  In a world that can be so cold and callous, I was moved to tears at this man's kindness.  I don't know his name or the outcome of Rusty's life, nor will I ever know, but I have seen that there are angels out there masquerading as human beings, and this restores my faith in the human race.

I hope this story puts a smile on your face and maybe a tear in your eye as it did me.

Non-human Great Ape Census
  from GAPNews@aol.com

GAP-USA Launches Census 2001 for Nonhuman Great Apes, Says "Make injustices visible"

Portland, OR -- The United States branch of The Great Ape Project (GAP), a group working to raise the legal and moral status of chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans and bonobos, announced today a census of nonhuman great apes in the United States. The Great Ape Project's "Census 2001" campaign -- modeled on the US government's Census 2000 -- highlights the fact that all great apes, human and nonhuman alike, share qualities including intelligence, complex social systems, and the ability to suffer.  For this reason, all should be counted as individuals and recognized through a census.

Paul Waldau, GAP's Executive Director, states, "Nonhuman great apes should be counted as individuals, just as humans are. They now suffer greatly -- chained in backyards, beaten, sold on the internet -- and we must make these injustices visible.  GAP's Census 2001 goes one step beyond the US government's Census 2000, and will call attention to the fact that there remain many complex individuals who still need to be counted--our fellow great apes."

GAP - USA's census will be carried out mainly by volunteers, or enumerators, who will report information about individual nonhuman great apes across the United States in zoos, circuses, laboratories, sanctuaries, and under private ownership. Enumerators can submit reports directly to GAP by filling out census forms at the Great Ape Project website at

http://www.greatapeproject.org/census.html

Sarah Whitman, Campaign Director for GAP-USA's Census 2001 says, "With our Census 2001, GAP will pick up where the US Census Bureau left off by recognizing the nonhuman great apes.  Census 2001 is one step up from Census 2000."

The Great Ape Project is an international organization working to raise the legal and moral status of nonhuman great apes.  GAP has chapters across the globe, and supporters include famed primatologist Jane Goodall.  To explore the Great Ape Project website, please see: http://www.greatapeproject.org .

The Lesson
by WantNoMeat@aol.com

Priorities needing to rearrange
I've awakened and made a change
I didn't notice or give a thought
to the misery my meat brought

Life I've learned to embrace
not to eat those that had a face
Eating flesh ~ humanities crime
it holds us in barbaric time

Once lusted aroma ~ repulsive now
with the pledging of a meatless vow
My head no longer turned
to this lesson I have learned

For the voiceless I will speak
and fight this war for the weak
Until all others see the light
And the world sets things right

"Only that kind of love for animals is beautiful and edifying which arises from the broader and more general love of the whole world of living creatures, a love whose most important and central feature must always be the love of mankind."
