Vegans: Space Aliens
or Compassionate Earthlings?

by Dr. Steve Best - sbest1@elp.rr.com

"Present global culture is a kind of arrogant newcomer. It arrives on the
planetary stage following four and a half billion years of other acts, and
after looking around for a few thousand years declares itself in possession
   of eternal truths."
                                                    ~ Carl Sagan

Carl Sagan's novel Contact (1985) and its recent film adaptation (1997) concerns the odyssey of Dr. Ellie Arroway, her passionate search for extraterrestrial intelligence. A brilliant scientist with a promising career, she has marginalized herself by focusing on issues considered disreputable by many of her peers. But when contact is actually made, her beliefs are vindicated and the position of homo sapiens in the universe is changed irrevocably.

Able to decode "the message" from outer space, scientists realize that it is a blueprint for constructing a machine for rapid space (and perhaps time) travel.  The machine is built, and Ellie and her team make contact, but their entire trip and conversation takes only twenty minutes. Lacking evidence that their conversations with aliens were real, their testimony is rejected by their peers.  We are left to wonder for ourselves as to the actuality of contact in the story, the possibility for it in real life, and the implications such contact might have for human beings.

Contact is a literary mapping of Sagan's scientific ideas. Both the book and film versions dramatize encounters with a vastly superior cosmic intelligence and prompt fascinating reflection on the limitations of science and human understanding, and the fragility of life on the "pale blue dot." Contact is a symptom that human beings are starting to raise seriously the question -- as one of science rather than science fiction -- for the first time: are we alone? The fact that NASA has sent cosmic messages in a radio-satellite bottle shows that there is at least some belief in the possibility of alien life.

Following Sagan's scenario (where the first images aliens picked up were those of a Hitler rally), it is somewhat amusing and embarrassing to consider that the messages that might be received are not those representing our greatest achievements in science, philosophy, and art, but rather the most insipid products of American mass culture. If aliens were to receive the sounds and images of Three's Company, The Jenny McCarthy Show, and Wheel of Fortune, rather than the dialogues of Plato, the sonatas of Mozart, the equations of Einstein, and the peaceful visions of Gandhi and King, they might wonder, indeed, if there is intelligent life on earth and pass us by.

The most critical theme of Contact concerns less the possibility of extraterrestrial intelligence, than the reality of an earthbound technological rationality which is so narrow and control-oriented that it is destroying the evolutionary opulence from which it emerged. The main message of Contact is that human beings have to overcome their hubris to recognize that they are not the most important, or certainly the only, life form on earth and likely within the cosmos at large.

If she only gets to ask one question to the alien "Vegans," Ellie says, it will be this: "How is it that you are so technologically advanced, and yet have not destroyed yourself?" How can a culture, in other words, be technologically advanced, peaceful, and sustainable all at once? In their dialogue with Ellie, the Vegans frankly state that they see us as backwards socially, economically, and technologically, and knew our planet was in serious trouble when they received televised images of Hitler. We learn that the Vegans are cosmic shepherds, part of a community of space beings who for billions of years have cooperated in stopping the dissipation of the universe by recycling galaxies through black holes.

Clearly Sagan is issuing a warning that our current society, intensely driven by science, technological innovation, an insatiable profit motive, and bitter rivalries is completely unsustainable, tailspinning into oblivion. Sagan is also suggesting, however, that things could be different, that we need not be embarking on a path of ecocide if, among other things, we related to the earth and its myriad life forms in a more respectful and compassionate way.

A satellite-mediated contact would mean "that someone has learned to live with high technology, that it is possible to survive technological adolescence. That alone, quite apart from the contents of the message, provides a powerful justification for the search for other civilizations" (Cosmos: 251). It would mean, in other words, that there is no inherent logic of technological destruction, no necessary path from the slingshot to the atom bomb, and that human beings can develop sciences and technologies that are advanced, sustainable, peaceful, and life-promoting instruments of Eros rather than Thanatos.

Sagan also believes that contact with an alien culture would lead to "a profound deprovincialization of the human condition" (Cosmos: 259). By learning our place in the cosmos at large, by understanding our cosmic roots, by realizing that we live together on one fragile planet with no real national boundaries, Sagan hopes we might develop more peaceful and sustainable societies. It is likely, he holds, that the Watson we might speak to on the other end of the cosmic phoneline would be far more intelligent and technologically advanced than us, such that we could not but be humbled. As Rachel Carson, author of Silent Spring, emphasized, we are still in the paleolithic stage of science, given our ignorance of ecology and lack of eco-wisdom.

Is it merely a coincidence that "vegans" are also earthlings who embody principles of a compassionate diet and lifestyle? Is it only accidental that vegetarians -- and vegans especially -- are considered utterly alien to the dominant culture of carnivores? Isn't it the case that, for all intents and purposes, we are from another galaxy?

Every vegetarian has encountered ignorance, bias, and prejudice. We aren't targeted -- at least not yet -- by bigots for violence, as are many people of color and homosexuals, but it is interesting how our lifestyle choices that are informed by awareness and compassion are routinely assaulted when the topic of food choice arises. I have noticed that most polite and liberal people would never directly challenge the beliefs, say, of a muslim fundamentalist or a homosexual, yet don't hesitate to put vegetarians on the defensive with a barrage of misinformed questions such as "Where do you get your protein?!"  While such queries superficially may regard pragmatic issues, the tone of voice and vehemence suggests that they really are attempts at character assassination.

Why is it that vegetarians are treated with contempt, mistrust, and disrespect, whereas liberal culture seems better able to tolerate any other form of difference and deviation from the norm? I don't think it is because we wear onion rings in our noses, dye our hair with spirulina and beet juice, or have orgies with cucumbers and cantaloupes (vive le difference!).

Clearly, vegetarians are treated with prejudice and open hostility because we raise repressed feelings of guilt in the conscience of the carnivore (such as it is), and because we violate the most fundamental norm of this society -- THOU SHALL NOT REFUSE TO DINE ON THE REMAINS OF MURDERED ANIMALS! Tearing the flesh of chickens, drinking the blood of cows, and gnawing on the bones of pigs -- such is the tao of the "civilizedd."

In our culture, eating animal flesh is associated with masculinity, modernization, and social status. Yet people of any race, gender, creed, class, and sexual preference can always sit down over a burger to gossip, to argue over current affairs, or even to discuss their differences. However weird or strange one carnivore may view another, they share one main thing in common (besides high cholesterol rates and proclivities toward disease): they believe the purpose of animals is for human consumption. Still, even the vegetarian can belly up in solidarity with the carnivores, if the animal-derived food is a milkshake or cheese pizza. But the vegan -- ah, the lonely vegan, a prisoner to principles -- must part ways with them all.

Sagan says nothing about the diet of the Vegans -- indeed, they seem to be disembodied spirits -- but their level of wisdom, spiritual insight, care for the world, and compassion is something for which every ethically and philosophically oriented vegetarian here on earth should strive. Every vegetarian knows that one should become a vegan for the same reasons that one becomes a vegetarian: to enhance one's health, to renounce the torture and slaughter of animals, and to improve the earth as a whole. Every damn dairy dollar of the vegetarian goes to raising cholesterol rates, perpetuating the suffering of chickens and dairy cows, and eroding ecological sustainability.

Well, who knows, maybe vegans are from another galaxy. Wherever we're from, we have "a message" for others -- carnivores and vegetarians alike -- regarding why we have broken with animal products completely and irrevocably. I hope we can make contact.

HOPE In Washington, Soon
from:  HOPEOrganizers@end-horse-slaughter.com

WE'RE ON OUR WAY TO WASHINGTON!

In just 8 short days, we will be there, in Lafayette Park, in Washington, D.C., for the horses! After a long year of hard work, words just don't exist to describe how excited the Organization Committee and the many, many HOPE supporters feel on the eve of the first annual national demonstration against horse slaughter!

As we gather in the Park on Monday, September 18, we will all know that Monday is a significant day in slaughter. It is the day when the largest number of horses are killed each week. As the minutes pass, and we listen to the voices of the speakers, and the crowd, we will also be hearing in our minds the awful sound of the stun device striking flesh and bone, and hear the scrabbling of hooves as the horse tries to escape it's fate, and the dreadful thud of its body hitting the floor of the stun chute. We will feel the terror, and pain of the wound from which there can be no recovery. We will hear the rattle of the shackle as it is attached to a leg, and see in our minds the knife cutting through soft, warm hide to the vital arteries, and the spill of the lifegiving blood as the heart pumps it out to the drains.

What we will show in the undercover videos taken in horse slaughterhouses will actually be happening to horses at that very moment.

WE HAVE A NEW NAME!

Due to technicalities in the incorporation of HOPE, we have changed our formal name from Humane Organization to Protect Equines (H.O.P.E.) to HOPE for Horses!  We like the new name, and feel it really represents what we are doing - providing HOPE for the horses that might otherwise end up at the slaughterhouse in the future. We HOPE you like it, too!

TRAVEL PLANS:

RALLY PROGRAM:

The full Rally program, with times, will be up on our website on Thursday, and will also be sent to each of you as a special supplement to this newsletter.

TRAILER CARAVAN:

If you are coming to Washington on Sunday, September 17th, join us in Rock Creek Park for the trailer decorating!  We will be gathering there at 2 p.m. to put the posters and cards on the trailers for the Caravan. If you are bringing your own vehicle, and want to participate in the Caravan, we will give you posters to put on the doors of your car or truck. Directions to Rock Creek Park are on our Travel site.  We look forward to seeing you there.

ON RALLY DAY:

The Rally will begin at 11 a.m. Please plan to be at the park shortly before 11.  Due to Park Service rules and regulations, only the set up crews will be allowed in the Park any earlier. If you are bringing signs to carry, please remember that Park Service rules require that all signs be hand carried, and cannot be mounted on sticks. Please also remember that HOPE's goal is a peaceful, educational event, and we ask that no one wear costumes, or act in any extreme manner while at the Rally.

PMU FOALS, PREMARIN, AND CENESTIN, THE ALTERNATIVE THAT SAVES LIVES:

September is also a month that has special significance in horse slaughter, because August and September are the time of year when the babies from the pregnant mare urine production farms are auctioned. Most of these babies, only four to six months old, are bought by killer buyers for the slaughterhouses.  Some of these babies may be being forced into the stun chute, their little heads taking the horrible blow, as we stand in Lafayette Park protesting this senseless slaughter.

Desiccated urine from pregnant mares is used in the manufacture of Premarin, a conjugated estrogen used in hormone replacement therapy for menopausal women, and is also prescribed for dogs with urinary incontinence.  The urine is collected through bags attached to the mares, who stand in straight stalls during their pregnancy so every drop of the estrogen-laden urine can be collected. Each year these mares are bred only to produce the estrogen-rich urine. The foals resulting from these breedings are a by-product, "industrial waste" of a billion-dollar hormone replacement drug industry, to be disposed of as quickly as possible. Best estimates show that there are as many as 80,000 mares being used this way, producing nearly that many foals each and every year.  These babies are only born to die.

Now there is an alternative, that doesn't bear the cost of foals' lives. Duramed Pharmaceuticals has received FDA approval for an equivalent hormone replacement drug that is derived completely from plants. HOPE supports and applauds Duramed for their intensive efforts in bringing to market a replacement drug that will save the lives of thousands of foals.

If you, or someone in your family is taking Premarin or another PMU product, please visit the Duramed site for more information on Cenestin!  Talk with your doctor about switching from Premarin to Cenestin, and save lives.

http://www.cenestin.com/index1.cfm

And please watch the HOPE site for our Premarin flyer that will be coming out soon, and help HOPE educate doctors and women about the alternatives to Premarin, and the hidden cost of foals lives, as we go forward through the coming year to educate the public about the price the HORSES pay for this drug.

THE COMING YEAR:

As we leave Washington on the 18th, we will leave knowing that the close of this year's Rally is not the end of the work that needs to be done before horse slaughter is over forever. The triad of organizations that comprise the North American Alliance Against Horse Slaughter, HOPE for Horses, HelpHorses in Canada, and the United States Citizens Committee Against Horse Slaughter (USCCAES), will be moving strongly forward with educational programs to help bring horse slaughter into national awareness, and moving steadily towards the most important phase of our work -- introducing and passing legislation that will outlaw horse slaughter throughout the United States and Canada.

Thoughts On Life & Death
by Robert Cohen - i4crob@idt.net

Hunters look death in the face, and they have an understanding of life that few animal rights people share.  I was once a hunter.  I was once a meat eater.  I understand.

About two months ago, I rescued a Boston Terrier from an animal shelter.  She had one day to live before they were going to kill her.  She is sleeping in the chair beside me as I type this.

She is my shadow...follows me everywhere...plants kisses on my face in the morning, and before sleep.  I stepped on her earlier, and she yelped with pain.  I felt guilty and bent down to pet her, and she licked my hand, over and over again.

She felt pain, and I felt guilt.  Do all animals feel pain?  Does it hurt to get a thorn or splinter, and does it hurt to die?

As I rubbed her leg and thigh, I noted how closely they resemble the leg and thigh of a chicken.  I was fascinated with the concept.  How we take for granted the chicken dinner, and not consider the moment of death.  A cut throat.  Is it equally as horrible to a human or dog or cow?  Did OJ's victims feel a terror shared by a slaughterhouse animal?  Does a human gunshot wound victim experience a similar pain as the deer?  The same terror?

When I sighted an animal in my scope, and held the life and death decision before pulling the trigger...did I consider the pain of bullet tearing through bone and flesh?  Would that hurt me?

Should I reject the horror of man's inhumanity to man in the horrible wars that have been fought, and applaud the ritualistic slaughter of animals.

Do I have alternatives?  The chicken tastes so good, as do the venison and quail.  Should these animals continue to suffer if I have alternative foods to eat.

They eat dogs in Korea.  That thought haunts me, as I watch my dog gently sleeping.  She knows me and responds to my call.  She loves me, I am certain.  She licks, and lets me rub her belly, and shows me signs of ecstasy as I pat her head or compliment her for being a good girl.  Would I eat her if I was starving?  Would I eat a friend or family member?

I have learned from this little dog.  We are animals too, and are connected to each other.  Occasionally, in her enthusiasm (licking frenzy) she nips my nose, and apologizes with licks and kisses.  She feels.  She has emotions.

I could never take her life, or the life of another living creature.

The Potato Theory
by HRHBertie@btinternet.com
A short theory on the demise of human civilization.

After returning to my native North East of England after many years away, I was filled with some trepidation as to what changes had occurred since my departure.  The reasons one leaves your birthplace are many, and I wondered whether the fabric of society had changed for the better, or for the worst. Sometimes we forget the real reasons why we leave. For me it was kind of pre-ordained as I was very different from other people and these differences became more and more apparent as time went on.  Great prophets have echoed the message "In order to give new insights to a society, it is necessary to leave it, then return".

If only things had not changed would I feel more optimistic about this.  Whilst there were many unemployed and the region was poor, the attitudes and treatment towards women, children and animals whilst being brutally harsh, was often a result of environmental conditions.  Violence and social problems were there, but there was still a sense of "right and wrong".  Sadly things have got much worse.  The community hardly exists anymore, violent crime and social problems like drugs are the accepted norm.  That's the really sad bit -- they believe this IS the norm. The generations that are now in place are the result of what has gone before.

I consider now, that whilst you can draw the link between dysfunctional fighting parents and this reflection in their offspring, and hence contributing to a successive moral degradation of the human spirit, they are in fact no way to blame for their behavior. They are merely puppets dancing to the tune of a discordant world.  Products of centuries of wars, killing, diseases, drinking, viciousness -- everything negative and nasty that can be thought up. If they and their forebears had been nurtured in an environment more akin to the original, the Garden of Eden, they would have reflected a similar peaceful nature and tranquillity. For cause and effect applies to everything and the effect is in no way to blame -- only the cause, for effect is the unavoidable sequence.  Plant a perfect potato in poor, disease-ridden soil and it will produce a grub-eaten unhealthy tuber.  Now plant this tuber to produce again in the same poor soil and its tuber will be even worse.  The result is still a potato, true to it's species, but both environmental circumstances and heredity have had a combined detrimental effect, and it is now a sorry specimen of the original. Until both these conditions are changed, improvement is just wishful thinking.

Exactly the same rule applies to humans, for the law of cause and effect exists in all creation, from the lowest form of life to the highest, the simplest to the most complex. Man's mind has become, through generations of wrong eating habits leading to wrong thinking, his own biggest enemy.  Within the cage of his head, constant thoughts of fear, frustration, aggression, depression and negative reactions to outside influences revolve until he dies; a bundle of self-imposed complexes all built up from a misguided but habitual way of life.

There is no doubt that different foods dictate the behavior of the eater.  Compare the nature of the carnivore with that of the herbivore.  The former is aggressive, the latter peaceful.  Watch the predatory animal go in for the kill. It builds up a frenzy of hate to achieve its purpose. Is it not logical to infer that this basic aggression must also be smoldering in the flesh-eating human?  Although we pride ourselves on being civilized and humane by dispatching our victims instantly, the primordial and barbaric instinct to kill remains. There is no other explanation for the viciousness prevalent today.  Faith in deities and religion may suppress this evil in man, but only a reformed diet will eradicate it. There are universal laws to which we must adhere, for the basis of all being is to ride on a wave of harmony which transmits and receives in a vast cosmic circle. If we bring our lives as far as possible in line with this harmony, we are bound to benefit. If we create discord by killing for meat and inflict suffering by eating dairy produce, then we are bound to suffer in return, for the original code of Eden has been broken. The basic cause of adverse conditions, both in the spiritual and physical life, is a direct result of the wrong food on our table. For how can we hope to advance in harmony and peace, yet continue to be predatory animals at the same time?

Wolves

Beautiful creatures of the night
who will care about your plight

So very misunderstood
but survive you should

You were put here for a reason
but have been persecuted for treason

Survive in the wild you must
else nature be unbalanced I trust

So few of you are still alive
we must find a way for you to thrive

Once a proud creature and one of distinction
but I fear you are headed for certain extinction

So many want to see you dead
tis a fate I so dread

History has painted an unfair image of you
but truth has little with it to do

Killing only when hungry, that is your style
to accomplish this you may travel many a mile

Never has a healthy wolf attacked a human being
but my furry friend, we are just not seeing

That only sick and frail animals is what you prey upon
hopefully soon on your horizon will be a new dawn

One of hope, of an ancient belief come true
as Indians thought so highly of you

The Creator put all creatures big and small
here on this great big spinning ball

We have already lost so many others
why must we see you as the enemy and not as brothers

It is not up to us to choose your fate
but sadly your numbers fall at such a fast rate

I do not wish for it to happen, for it to be true
that our children will only know of you from the zoo

I pray that doesn't happen too fast
oh please Creator, don't let today be their last~

   Quote To Remember

"Now, comrades, what is the nature of this life of ours?  Let us face it: our lives are miserable, laborious, and short.  We are born, we are given just so much food as will keep the breath in our bodies, and those of us who are capable of it are forced to work to the last atom of our strength; and the very instant that our usefulness has come to an end we are slaughtered with hideous cruelty.....The life of an animal is misery and slavery:  that is the plain truth.....Man is the only real enemy we have"
