Personalize Your Protest Letters

To personalize your letters to senators, representatives, officials, labs, schools, etc., etc., start with a sentence about yourself and why YOU'RE writing, such as:

    "As a long-time resident of your district..."
    "As a mother of three (you don't need to say what species!)..."
    "As a teen-ager in your school..."
    "As a taxpayer concerned with family values..."
    "As a senior citizen who has volunteered for many years..."
    "As a person who loves vacationing in Utah..."

The point is to PERSONALIZE your introduction to let the reader know this issue affects you PERSONALLY and you have thought about how it impacts your life, your values, your family, your environment...etc.

This makes what you say EFFECTIVE and much less easy to "dismiss" as part of a preformatted "chain letter."  It opens you up to the reader as a real person with whom they might identify.  Just a suggestion...

My Dissection Experience
by LucKeeLeX@aol.com

In my 8th grade science class, I was literally forced to make the initial incision into the Sheep's eye my group had to dissect...it was such a horrific event.  I had written permission from my parents that was supposed to have excused me from the dissection, but my teacher thought I was just doing it to get out of the work, so he made me do it.  Needless to say, he never lived his mistake down, and I'd venture a guess to say that the last day of school that year was the highlight of his career.

In my Biology class last year, we were to dissect frogs.  As I had done with the Sheep's eye, I got written permission from my folks to be excused from the lab activity.  My teacher's solution...Watch a dissection on the internet!  After much searching, i found a very Animal Rights friendly site who showed the complete process in lovely, detailed DRAWINGS...he disapproved, saying that I would learn better if I used an online dissection simulator...throughout my viewing of the cartoon dissection, I tried to listen to what he was instructing the class to do.  There was only one problem...he gave the class no instruction whatsoever!  He just gave them their frog, gave them the scalpel, and let them loose!  I was horrified.  But like I said, he complained about my choice of dissection sites, saying I wouldn't learn anything.  A few days after the dissection, we had to take a test on it.  I was the only person to receive a perfect score of 100%, everyone else scoring in the high 70 to low 80s.  However, he did admit that he felt really stupid when he saw my test score.

Factory Farmed Mink Disease

John Gorham of the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington describes a condition that affects factory-farmed mink in the latest issue of Fur Rancher.  The condition, known as Nonspecific Enteritis (inflammation of the intestinal tract, especially of the small intestine) frequently affects mink.  Its cause is unknown.  The disease appears whether conditions on the factory farm are neat and clean or sloppy and unsanitary.  In acute cases, the animals may be unable to eat, have bloody diarrhea, and die within three to four days.  In chronic cases, the animal will not digest the food she has eaten and may not die for a month.  As a result, she will become badly emaciated before her death.  (Mink are semi-aquatic animals and are incapable of living a healthy life in barren wire cages surrounded by thousands of their own kind

Are Animal Rights People Extremists?

Do you think it's not extreme to murder living creatures for lipstick?

Do you think it's not extreme to breed more dogs and cats while 7 million die in shelters each year?

Do you think it's not extreme to murder a living creature to wear their dead skin?

Finally, do you think it's not extreme to torture living creatures without their consent to make a living?

We are ALL extremists. I prefer to be an extremist for justice, compassion and peace, and not for pain, murder, rape and oppression.

Do It Anyway
written by Mother Teresa

People are often unreasonable, illogical,
And self-centered;
Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you
Of selfish, ulterior motives;
Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some
False friends and some true enemies;
Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank;
People may cheat you;
Be honest and frank anyway.

What you spend years building,
someone could destroy overnight;
Build anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness,
they may be jealous;
Be happy anyway.

The good you do today,
people will often forget tomorrow;
Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have,
and it may never be enough;
Give the world the best you've got anyway.

You see, in the final analysis
it is between you and God
It was never between you and them anyway.
