If I Ate Poultry, I'd Get the "Chicken Runs"
by Park StRanger@aol.com

Some vegetarian groups like VIVA! (Vegetarians International Voice for Animals) and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine believe that the new animated movie "Chicken Run" will cause a lot of people to go vegetarian.  The movie features claymation chickens trying to escape from a prison camp poultry farm.

Dr. Neal Barnard, president of PCRM, thinks that the backlash against chicken will be similar to what happened to pork sales after the movie "Babe" was released.  PCRM has a banner link at their site which reads "Seen Chicken Run?  Ready to Switch to a Vegetarian Diet?"  The link leads to a PCRM article about the health risks of consuming chicken.

Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine
http://pcrm.org/

And in England, VIVA! has produced a short commercial featuring a chicken in a battery cage called "Chicken Can't Run" to be shown at selected London theaters before screenings of "Chicken Run."

I hope the movie does change a few eating habits, that it makes a lot of kids turn up their noses at fried bird for a while, but it makes me wonder how cute talking pigs and animated lumps of clay can have more influence in an hour and a half than all the years we VegActivists have been writing and talking about health risks and animal suffering.  Go figure.

Maybe we in the movement should be making movies.  There are plenty of pro-AR Hollywood stars that would probably work cheap doing the voices.  But I read that "Chicken Run" cost 40 million to make.  Maybe we should start small, I have a camcorder and some sock puppets.

"South Pork" -- a story about some cute but vulgar piglets who don't want you to bring home the bacon.

Naw, never mind.

Seriously (semiseriously said, tongue in beak), if any of our non-vegetarian readers see "Chicken Run" and it makes you want to stop eating animal products, write us with any questions you may have about Veganism and we will be glad to take you under our wing.

In a bizarre piece of irony, Burger King has a promotional tie-in with "Chicken Run" and is offering two whoppers for 2 dollars.  Their ads show cartoon chickens urging people to ''Save the Chickens - Eat a Whopper.''  I drove by a Burger King today and noticed that right beside that poster in their window was another poster promoting their spicy chicken sandwich.  Huh?

The restaurant chain Chick-fil-A just announced plans to sue Burger King for copyright infringement.  Chick-fil-A claims that BK's ad is stolen from it's own ad campaign showing cows with signs that say "Eat Mor Chikin."  We certainly hope that these two animal exploiters waste a lot of money in the courts on this trivial lawsuit.

  Hey!!!  Burger King and Chick-fil-A,
Animal Rights Online has a new slogan....
"Save the Cows AND the Chickens, Go Vegan"

Fourth of July Pet Safety
by DogAdvocat@aol.com

Independence Day is one of the most fearsome times of the year for dogs and cats.  Not only are the noises terrifying, but there are also people who either through sadistic behavior or sheer thoughtlessness, sometimes brought on by over-consumption of alcohol, will attach firecrackers to animals, or even just try show the dog or cat how exciting fireworks can be.  Either way, this can cause pets to dart out in front of cars, bite those that are terrifying them (risking animal control impound), or run without knowing where it is going or how to get back.

So, the best way to protect pets, whether it be your own or your neighbors, is to keep them indoors, preferably in an interior room, not near windows or glass doors.  Play a radio or television loud enough to help drown out the sound of firecrackers.  It can be helpful to play both radio and television at the time, as the alternated sounds cover outside sounds even better.

If need be, your veterinarian can supply you with tranquilizers for your dog or cat, but ask now, because all your vets other clients may be asking too.  Don't count on tranquilizers to do the job without other measures.  Frequently dogs will be so terrified if left outside that it seems they were never medicated at all -- then after it is all over, the tranquilizer finally works, and works strongly.

Many pet guardians stay home with their dogs and cats on the fourth just to make sure they are safe and feel more secure.  If that is your choice, make sure you don't make your pet more phobic by encouraging their fear.  Petting and assuring your pet that all is well can be seen as praise for the fear they are showing.  It's important to act as normal as possible.

Thinking about how you would feel if suddenly a war broke out with bombs and grenades may help you to empathize with your pet.  Also, if you see a stray cat or dog that looks in need of a temporary shelter, please be very cautious about being bit out of sheer fear, but if you can do it safely, please let them have a place to stay until the fourth is over.

Animal Rights Online wishes a happy and peaceful Fourth of July to all of our subscribers and their companion animals.

A Whale of a Story
by Park StRanger@aol.com

The 2000 meeting of the International Whaling Commission starts tomorrow, July 3, in Australia.  Animal Rights Online will be monitoring the developments of this meeting and reporting and commenting to you, our AR friends.  For the very first time the opening meetings of the IWC will allow television coverage, so tune in to CNN, and other television news media, for coverage.

Australia is expected to call for a greater whale protected area, a whale sanctuary in the South Pacific, while Japan is expected to request that their illegal commercial whaling is recognized as legitimate.

Ever since the ban on commercial whaling in the late 1980s, Japan has used a loophole in the International Whaling Commission regulations to continue fishing for whales, calling it Scientific Research.  Their so-called Scientific Research supplies Japanese Sushi bars with meat from 500 Minke whales every year.  It has been determined that Japan is also catching endangered species of whales.

This year Japan wishes to expand their whale catch and to make it legitimate, by the IWC regulations, for Japan to catch great whale species such as the greys and sperm whales.

Japan uses several arguments that seem to be only lame excuses for making money for their whaling industry.  It doesn't matter if the species are endangered or not, Japan seems only to be concerned about making money from killing whales.

They call it their cultural heritage to catch whales.  So Kung Fu-king what.

It is cultural tradition that Godzilla kicks ass in Tokyo.  South Carolina calls it their (stupid) Southern Cultural Heritage tradition to display the Confederate Flag. It offends a certain group of people to display memories of slavery.

It offends a certain group of us who are against animal slavery, to continue to slaughter marine sentient beings for profit.

Japan, we are offended by your actions.  Stop It Now

Homeopathic Flea and Insect Repellents

You can use his formula for any critter -- mosquitoes, flies, aphids, ants, etc. However, I would recommend that if you don't want to kill these critters (which I don't recommend if you don't have to) you can buy at a pharmacy:

    Ant: Formica Rufa
    Mosquito: Culex
    Head Lice: Pediculus Capitis
    Flea: Pulex Irritans
    Honey Bee: Apis Mellifica
    Wasp: Vespa Crabro
Tick: Gotta make this one by hand You can also order these from: Hahnemann
Pharmacy, Albany, CA at: 1-510-527-3003, and use a 6X potency.

IF YOU WANT TO DO THIS 'BY HAND' HERE'S WHAT YOU DO:

Catch 3-6 fleas -- smash 'em up real good -- put them in 1/2 cup water (in a bottle), cap it and shake in the palm of your hand hard (hopefully a container with a cork or cap on it when you do this :-)) 100 times. Stop.

Strain it through muslin into another container because you don't want bits of the body or anything in any of your other bottles.

Then, take 1 teaspoon of it (don't bring a body of a flea with it) into another 1/2 cup of water (clean glass), cap it and shake it 100 times in the palm of your hand. Stop.

Then, take 1 teaspoon out of it, and put into another 1/2 cup/glass of water. Cap it and shake it 100 times. Stop.

Then, take 1 teaspoon out of it, put into another 1/2 cup/glass of water. Cap it and shake it 100 times. Write on a label: FLEAS 4X and put it on the container -- keep it tightly capped and in your refrigerator.

Then, get a spray bottle -- pint or quart size. Fill with water. Put one teaspoon of this last bottle into it. Gently shake it. Then, spray it on animal 3 times a day for 2 days and watch the fleas leave town!

Be sure to do this OUTSIDE or fleas will jump off in your home!

If you have fleas in carpet, you can spray this directly on it (lightly -- you don't have to soak anything). Do it 3 days in a row.

If you run out of your 4X potentized fleas, you can always make more.

IF YOU HAVE BOUGHT THE REMEDY PRE-MADE: 1. Put 6 tablets in quart of water and gently shake until tablets are dissolved.

2. Put one pint of water into a spray bottle. Spray the area that is affected OR spray the area where you want to keep them from entering or moving across.

3. Example: if you have fleas in your carpet -- spray your carpet. If they are on the dog, spray the dog (or cat or whomever). If you have ticks around, spray it on your clothes before going out -- but ALWAYS check yourself for ticks upon your return.

The above website explains the concept thoroughly and gives instructions for making your own. However, Pulex 6x can be purchased easily at any homeopathic pharmacy.

    * Local and national media coverage

Projects Conservation, Preservation, Restoration

The Brower Youth Awards recognize the outstanding and innovative leadership efforts of youth across the country that are working on environmental conservation, preservation and restoration.

"...Whatever you do in life, make sure to include CPR for the Earth. The Earth is a living, throbbing organism. It needs CPR-Conservation-Preservation-Restoration-on a regular basis." (David R. Brower)

Conservation: "Conserving our natural resources does not mean using them up less quickly. We can relearn conservation by reading the earth, observing that in Nature, nothing is wasted, and everything is made ready for the next user."   (David R. Brower)

Projects in conservation work to eliminate or decrease our use of natural resources. Here are some examples of conservation projects:

    * A project that plays a substantial role in organizing a local community to
        pass a mass transportation initiative

    * A project that reduces energy use by planting trees, vines, and shrubs to
shade school campus air conditioners and buildings

Preservation: "Aldo Leopold reminded us that the first rule of intelligent tinkering is to save all the parts. Preserving life on earth means saving all those things we can never replace, like species and cultures."(David R. Brower)

Projects in preservation work to protect ecosystems or parts of ecosystems.  Here are some examples of preservation projects:

    * A project that secures protected nesting area for an endangered song bird

    * A project that plays a substantial role in blocking development of wetlands
via ongoing peaceful civil disobedience (sits-ins, demonstrations, street
        theater)

Restoration: "Restoration means putting the Earth's life-support systems back in working order in a way that allows us to rediscover our own place in the natural order." (David R. Brower)

Projects in restoration work to reestablish the healthy functioning of ecosystems or parts of ecosystems. Here are some examples of restoration projects:

    * A project that reclaims an abandoned lot, creates an organic garden and
        installs an eco-center

    * A project that cleans up a critical half-mile of creek and plants native
        species along the banks

The Selection Process
Youth from 13 to 22 years old who have led environmental projects are invited to apply for the Brower Youth Awards. Applications are due August 4th, 2000. A Selection Committee, comprised of youth and adults who work closely with youth, reviews the applications. The members of the Selection Committee are based across the United States and come from a variety of disciplines including activism, academics and government. The Selection Committee will nominate ten finalists. From the finalists, the Steering Committee chooses the award recipients.

Eligibility
The Brower Youth Awards recognize the outstanding and innovative leadership efforts of youth across the country that are working on environmental conservation, preservation, and restoration.

"People my age should count on checking out reasonably soon, but our young people are going to have to live on this planet quite a bit longer, so we're depending on them to shape us up before it's too late." (David R. Brower)

To be eligible for a year 2000 Brower Youth Award, you and your project need to meet the following guidelines:

  * You live in the United States, the District of Columbia or Puerto Rico.
  * You are between 13 and 22 years old by August 4, 2000.
  * If you are 17 or younger, you are enrolled in school (public, private or
        home school).
  * If you are 17 or younger, your parent or legal guardian will sign your application.
  * Your project is associated with a school, group, club, or organization.
  * You played the major leadership role in organizing and implementing the
project. You can think of this like making a film. Many people contribute
to the film, but one person is recognized as the director -- the person with
the vision, the motivation, and the leadership skills to get the film
        completed.
*Your project fits into one or more of conservation, preservation, or restoration.
*Your project is developed, substantially implemented, and is showing results
        by August 4, 2000.

Epitaph To A Dog

Near this spot are deposited the remains
of one who possessed beauty without vanity,
strength without ferocity,
and all the virtues of man without his vices

This praise, which would be unmeaning flattery
if inscribed over human ashes,
is but a just tribute to the memory of
      BOATSWAIN, A DOG
who was born at Newfoundland
            MAY, 1803
      And died at Newstead Abbey
