Animal Experimentation
    by Marc Bekoff  - bekoffm@spot.Colorado.EDU

So, what did you do today?

Last week the American Society of Primatologists met in Boulder.  One question that came to mind was how many 1000s of animals are these (and other) researchers responsible for keeping alone in small cages, subjecting to horrible experimental treatments (infecting them with diseases, tinkering with brains, ripping apart youngsters from care-givers to study once again the development of parent-infant bonds and socialization, and get this - studying the effect of different types of music on chimpanzees housed alone) and, yes, "sacrificing" = killing them "in the name of science." It was no surprise that the music study was done at the Coulston Foundation in Alamogordo, New Mexico, a ghastly research prison that's been repeatedly found in violation of the federal Animal Welfare Act. To be fair, there were some very interesting studies on cognition and various aspects of the behavior of free-ranging wild primates.

I also wondered how these researchers tell others about what they do in the course of a normal day. I imagined the following scene. A  child asks of a parent:  "So, what did you do today?" After getting rid of all the jargon and fluff her parent's response boils down to such statements as: "Oh, I took a monkey from his mother and sibs to see what would happen," "I killed chimpanzees to study drug reactions," "I blinded cats to learn about vision," or "I trained rats first to avoid shock and then didn't allow them to do it, and watched them go berserk, squeal for help, give up, and passively accept the shock." Well, I sure wouldn't miss those mealtime conversations.

Numerous studies have shown how smart and emotional many animals are, and how they deeply suffer from anxiety and pain, so how in the world do some people do what they do - rob animals of their spirits and souls - and then go home and eat? Ah, they're helping humankind. Hmm, do unto others...Oh, I just wonder...

Warning

My husband got a call from a lady who is with the State Dept. of Agriculture.  It was about a man calling himself Tom who calls people in the paper who have found lost dogs.  He goes on to tell the people a story of how he is having family problems and that he needs a very loving dog.  He is from the Bradenton [Oklahoma] area.  He's actually using the dogs for HIS OWN PERSONAL EXPERIMENTS!  Please pass this along to anyone you know.

Animal Rights Hall of Fame

We are requesting nominations for election to the US Animal Rights Hall of Fame. All US residents, living or dead, currently active or not, are eligible (except for Alex Hershaft, because of his key role in launching the project). Each nomination, including a brief summary of the person's contribution, should be sent privately to ARHOF@AnimalRights2000.org

The Hall of Fame will be launched at Animal Rights 2000, the national conference taking place July 1-5 near the nation's capital. The purpose is to recognize the outstanding contribution of selected individuals to the recognition of animal rights.

In order to give due consideration to the past two decades of our movement's history, four of the five individuals elected this year must have begun their activity before 1991. In future years, this number should decrease gradually, until the starting year is no longer a limiting factor.

The voting will be conducted by the speakers at Animal Rights 2000 and subsequent national animal rights conferences. In years when there is no national conference, the Summit for the Animals will be asked to conduct the election.

The US Animal Rights Hall of Fame will be governed by a committee composed of two representative of past inductees, one representative of the Summit for the Animals Executive Committee, and one representative of the national conference organizers.

Your comments on the concept and management of the US Animal Rights Hall of Fame should be sent privately to USARHOF@AnimalRights2000.org.

"People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has won its case hands-down against Michael Doughney for his use of the Internet domain name "PETA.ORG." In 1995, Doughney registered "PETA.ORG" with Network Solutions, Inc., for "People Eating Tasty Animals," which he fraudulently represented as a nonprofit organization."

A Parrot's Prayer
by Sally Brooks - Sbcharley@aol.com

For all the wild caught parrots so savagely netted and swept away from their families while their babies dumped into burlap sacks cried out in terror.

  LORD HEAR OUR PRAYER..........

For all the exotic birds that witnessed the destruction of all the blessed trees and fled fires in fear from man's thirst to dominate, stripping the land of all its inhabitants, leaving nothing but bare ground behind.

  LORD HEAR OUR PRAYER..........

For all the parrots that struggled through the capture, but died unmercifully in transport from the stress of overcrowded, barbaric, confinements and inconceivable horror.

  LORD HEAR OUR PRAYER.......

For all the survivors that made it into captivity, but exist in a nightmare of confinement unable to use their God given wings of flight as they once remembered.

  LORD HEAR OUR PRAYER.........

For all the baby birds bred in captivity whose crop's burned or have died needlessly from harshness of human hands.

  LORD HEAR OUR PRAYER..........

For all the captive birds that have been erased from their owner's consciousness and are abandoned to a lifeless existence with only a distant memory of what is was like to hear a gentle voice from someone that used to care.

  LORD HEAR OUR PRAYER...........

For all those creatures who don't know what it's like to live life as a bird or even to feel the breeze or sunlight but are doomed to darkness in closets or garages, trapped inside covered cages or shackled.

  LORD HEAR OUR PRAYER......

For all the macaws, cockatoos, amazons and conures that are stripped of their vocal cords for screaming, their sensitive beaks cut back to prevent biting.

  LORD HEAR OUR PRAYER.......

For all birds that end up for sale in pet shops or breeders, like used merchandise unwanted and frightened in strange surroundings with nothing more than the familiar sight of bars on a cage.

  LORD HEAR OUR PRAYER.....

For all the neglected birds that are sick with infections from filthy conditions and malnourishment that may never recover and know what it is to feel healthy and be playful.

  LORD HEAR OUR PRAYER.........

For all the misconceived parrots who were beaten, stabbed, blinded and burned for just being a parrot.

  LORD HEAR OUR PRAYER.............

For every African Grey and Cockatoo that punishes itself from confinement and boredom by maiming their bodies and plucking their feathers and for those who have lost all spirit of life and sway their head low from side to side slowly into insanity.

  LORD HEAR OUR PRAYER.........

We ask humbly of you, dear Lord to look upon all of your magnificent feathered creations.  Protect them from evil and harm caused by man and to bring forth an awakening in the human heart and make it a kinder and gentler world for all captive birds........Amen

Parrots are the most misunderstood pet and the third most popular. Most buyers are unaware of what they are getting into when purchasing a parrot and because of the mess and their desire to chew, they are unfortunately caged. What's worse is the owners find that it is much easier to leave the bird inside the cage all the time until the bird usually resorts back to wild behavior where the owner has no control then its sold.

I have just read an inspiring article in Birdtalk magazine, August edition about a man who started taking in so many unwanted macaws and tried to build them suitable housing, but it wasn't enough. It was still confinement and in his heart he knew that these birds belonged to be free and is now in the process of introducing them back into the wild with very careful planning. It is truly remarkable how this man wants to go against all odds to see that birds can do what nature has intended them to do, fly free.

Derry Down
by tapster@mindspring.com

We lost another from our ancient tribe
wind whipped across our cherub faces
we were angels because we cared for them
we did not cannibalize those with souls

Celtic pleats were ironed at the brim
we pranced beaten paths near rivers
embraced behind cold twisted brambles
loved the early lambs that were slain

Chills of the Blarney beat my breast
the saint who gave me life will leave
in primordial tenderness I weave tales
of dark-haired women near Derry Down

Strange and ancient cabalic sounds
float rhythmically over hill and dale
Emerald Isle shines and sparkles
forever as their women bear seeds

from Alzheimer's now,
after a life time of meat and dairy)
