Torches for Peace


 

    On Lag B'Omer, May 6th, 1996 there was a happening at Ein-Gedi called
    "The Youth Movement for Peace".  Teenagers representing Jewish youth
    groups from all over the world attended along with teenagers from all
    parts of Israel.  Shimon Peres, the prime minister of Israel, came to
    speak to his young supporters about his future plans and policies for
    peace in the Middle East.

    There was a performance by a youth group from Rishon Le Zion, speeches
    by the Minister of Education, Amnon Rubinstein, and the head of the
    Jewish Agency, Abraham Burg, laser shows, fireworks, and music.  The
    happening ended with a performance by the Israeli singer, Aviv Gefen,
    who is identified with the peace efforts. Over a hundred students from
    Tabor High School participated in this happening.
