This is the story of Captain Morgan. He was found by some animal shelter workers on the Friday night before Christmas 2000. That night, the temperatures had dropped to 11 degrees F. He was frozen to the ground, under a tree, on the side of the road. When they picked him up, they found he had wrapped himself around an elderly female Chihuahua. They credited him with saving her life and rewarded him by giving him extra time in the shelter. I came across him at Petfinders.org on New Year's Eve. I emailed the contact to see if he was still there. She couldn't tell me for sure since his time was up that day, but she felt that being a holiday, he may have gotten another reprieve. She promised if he was still there, she would hold him for me. I called the shelter on New Year's Day. They already had my name on his cage to hold him for me unitl I could get there to pick him up. As soon as I saw him, I knew he was a very sick dog that needed to get to the vet immediately. His coat was like straw and he could barely pick up his head. He had frostbite where he had no fur. His left eye was ulcerated and very sore looking. The whole right side of his head was damaged. His jaw was crooked with no teeth on that side, but the worst damage was to his eye, which had completely ulcerated out. I took him home and made him comfortable until the next morning, at which time he had surgery to try to save the vision in the one eye and remove the infection from the other and close the socket. After 3 weeks of eye drops and ointments 3 times a day, the stitches were removed and Morgan could see me for the first time and his reaction made it all worth it. He is one sweet little boy. |
