I served aboard the Okie boat from 1971-1975. I'm married with two children ages 11 and 14. I'm currently the Information Systems Mansger for a major insurance company. The time I spent aboard the Okie was in the S-3 Division working in the Soda Fountain, Laundry, Clothing Small Stores, and S-3 Admin Clerk.

Great site! Thanks for preserving some of the most life-shaping times of my early days. I spent a number of years on the 7th Flt. Staff in the Command Center, primarily working as assistant fleet scheduler and getting used to the banging of the 5 inch j

Oh My God! This is like finding a dead relative alive again. I still have dreams about the boat and wake up feeling sick. Living in the compartment way aft, five decks down, stacked three-high with 60 other guys was a pivotal time in my life.
Loved it and wouldn't change a thing. I was in the Com7thFlt band and did a lot of work with the admiral's (Holloway?) staff.
An incredible site that is a great find for anyone from that old boat. I'll check back often for shipmates.

Nice site... mostly nice just because it's there!
and I'm sure I speak for most. I was on the ship
pretty much all of 1968, and was discharged a month early due to the ship's departure for Japan.
I was an ETN2 working in the OE division and my claim to OKC fame was determining how much of the
superstructure to remove for our 1968 trip up the
Columbia River. I ended up taking off the URD4 radio direction finder antenna and the TACAN array. Boy, was I looking up when we passed under
those bridges! She was a great ship. May she
rest in peace under those 1000 fathoms of water off Guam. Our hearts will always be with her.

Dan Namock, Don Gregory (wife Patti) and Tom Morrison were all from the same small town stationed on the OKC. We spent many happy times at Hunters Point and then San Diego and made lots of friends on ship, Big Ike, Rick from Gaum and Paul Moffit. Those we
e the days, parties, trips to TJ, and catching the quarter snatcher to get to the ship. Patti and I were lucky enough to spend a foggy day at sea for dependants day on the OKC. So many memories! The best had to be standing on the bank of the Columbia riv
r watching the OKC make its way up river for the Portland Rose Festival in June of 1968. Dan, Don & Patti, Tom and I are still friends and stay in touch. Anybody from the signal or communications crew remember us?

I have been searching for OKC reunions and have finally come across this web site. After
spending over 10 years of my navy career on the Okie Boat I have a lot of nostalgia for
the old girl, and was extremely sadden about her demise as a target. Those 1 years were
the best of my career and I will never forget all my shipmates I worked alongside and hit
the beach with in every port in the far east. When I decommissioned her in 79, it was like
losing a best friend, so I put in a work request and had teak wood installed on the
Quarterdecks of my next ship, USS Blue Ridge, to privately have a reminder of the OKC for
all those of us who crossed decked. The rallying cry in the Chiefs mess was "It
wasn't like this on the Okie Boat. So many more stories and m mories are waiting to be
told, but enough for now. I congratulate you on the website. Great job, only to get

Dave, Thanks for your interest in keeping our "life and times" aboard the Okie
Boat alive! In retrospect, where else could young men have had such adventure? Who but the
Navy would have given us those E-Ticket rides in the Tonkin Gulf? And why did we not have
our heads examined for signing up in the first place? Your heart would have broken had you
seen the bridge in February - stripped and broken. I hope someone had the foresight to

Comments:

liberty and the importance of team work bonded many young men and taught them the real
meaning of leadership.
