SAF acquires eight Apaches

    Dr Tony TanThe SAF is acquiring eight Boeing Apache attack helicopters to meet Singapore's operational defence needs.
    Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Tony Tan announced this today after witnessing a Guards exercise at the Punggol Training Area.
    Dr Tan said several tenders had been carefully considered before the decision to purchase the helicopters was made.
    "we have signed a contract with Boeing for the purchase of eight Apaches." Dr Tan said an attack helicopter capability fits in well with the SAF's development as a modern and balanced force.
    Mindef says the first Apaches are expected to be delivered in about three years.
    Before making the announcement, Dr Tan witnessed a heliborne exercise by 550 Guardsmen from the 3rd Guards Battalion.
    Codenamed PEGASUS, the exercise also involved 4 UH-1H helicopters and 4 Super Pumas from the RSAF.
