The SAF is acquiring eight Boeing Apache attack helicopters to meet
Singapore's operational defence needs.
Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Tony Tan announced this
today after witnessing a Guards exercise at the Punggol Training Area.
Dr Tan said several tenders had been carefully considered before the
decision to purchase the helicopters was made.
"we have signed a contract with Boeing for the purchase of eight
Apaches." Dr Tan said an attack helicopter capability fits in well with the SAF's
development as a modern and balanced force.
Mindef says the first Apaches are expected to be delivered in about
three years.
Before making the announcement, Dr Tan witnessed a heliborne exercise
by 550 Guardsmen from the 3rd Guards Battalion.
Codenamed PEGASUS, the exercise also involved 4 UH-1H helicopters and 4
Super Pumas from the RSAF.
