In the middle of thr tangled Wilderness was Chancellorsville--which was not a town or a hamlet or even a "ville." It was one building--the half-century old, two-and-a-half-story brick inn owned by the Chancellor family. It was located about 11 miles west of Fredericksburg, at the intersection of the five roads. Ely's Ford Road ran southeast, meeting Mineral Spring Road a few miles north of Chancellorville. The Orange Turnpike ran from Orange Court House to Wilderness Church where it intersected with the Orange Plank Road which also ran east from Orange. At Chancellorsville, the two roads separated again, both running east towards Frederickburg. Trickling Northeast from Chancellorsville was River Road.
