Recent documentaries and the book "Tyne To Titanic" allege that in spite of denials by crew and company, class discrimination was practiced when evacuating Titanic.
The Facts
No 3rd class passenger was called to give evidence at the British Enquiry
1st Class Women Saved 97%
2nd Class Women Saved 86%
3rd Class Children Saved 45%
1st Class Children Saved 99% (Lorraine Allison accounted for as perished)
2nd Class Children Saved 100%
3rd Class Children Saved 52%
1st Class men Saved 49%
2nd Class men Saved 8%
3rd Class men Saved 20%
Crew Men Saved 22%
Crew Women Saved 86%
From the above figures one is led to believe the Edwardian practice of Women and Children held good, but that class distinction took precedence hence the marked difference between 1st 2nd and 3rd Class women and children saved.
The above statistics clearly show a bias toward 1st class passengers. Indeed it should be noted that the percentage of 1st class men saved almost matches that of 3rd class children who perished.
