’Titanic’ Wave Sinking Rivals on Album Charts

Sales of the Titanic soundtrack can only ne described as, well, titanic.

In the week ending Feb. 15, history’s top-selling movie score sold a staggering 848,000 copies, the second highest one-week tally for an album not making its chart debut, according to SoundScan. The Bodyguard soundtrack sold 1.06 million in late 1992.

Titanic’s biggest seven-day total since entering Billboard 10 weeks ago comes in the wake of last week’s Oscar nominations. The film earnes a record-tying 14, including dramatic score (by James Horner) and original song (Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On, penned by Horner and Will Jennings).

The soundtrack, No. 1 for the sixth week, ramks sixth in one-week totals since SoundScan began tabulating sales in 1991. It’s behine Bodyguard and the chart debuts of Pearl Jam’s Vs. (950,000), Garth Brooks’ Sevens (897,000), Pearl jam’s Vitalogy (877,000) and The Beatles Anthology 1 (856,000).

Titanic is inking Pearl Jam’s shot at a fourth consecutive No. 1 album. after premiering as No.2 last week, the Seattle band’s Yield gets pushed to third place, supplanted byt Dion’s Let’s Talk About Love.
