It was beginning to get dark when the party broke up. Noel found herself lost and alone as she sat on a lounge chair by the pool. " Now how am I supposed to get home?" she asked herself. " Can't ask Tina, she went to see the doctor…"
She stopped talking as she heard footsteps behind her. Better safe than sorry, she didn't want to risk anyone else finding out.
" Hi." A familiar voice said.
She turned her face to the sound and smiled. " Hi Nick. So the party was a success?"
He nodded his head. " A big one. There's someone on the phone who wants to say hi to you." He held the phone out to her.
" To me?" she said confused. She reached out and after a few quick gropes found the phone and put it up to her ear. " Hello?"
Nick watched her as she waited for the reply, not really paying much attention. He already knew who it was and what was going to be said.
" Noel! It's Tina. You're not going to believe this… you were right!"
" What?" Noel's mouth was open in surprise as she held the phone.
" You were! Dr. Albright said we were lucky to get that appointment at 6 and then she said we were even more lucky to be having twins! Can you believe it? I'm 25 and I'm having twins! Brian said to tell you thanks since you were the first to know."
Noel was still a little in shock but suddenly broke into a huge grin. " That is so great! Oh wow! Congratulations! Times two!"
" Thanks a lot Noel, I'll see you tomorrow okay?"
" Okay Tina, bye." She hung up and held the phone out.
Nick took it and smiled at her. He was a little confused when she didn't smile back but figured she was still a little surprised. " So this was an interesting first day with us I guess. We get worse, just come to one of the birthday parties we throw."
" Yeah, it was a little crazy today. And I think I'll stay away from the pool parties…"
Nick laughed softly. " I guess you might want to…" He started to say something else but was interrupted.
" Nani! Where are you?"
Noel sat up straight. " I'm over here Ryan! At the neighbor's!" she glanced in the direction she had last heard Nick and smiled apologetically. " My brother."
Ryan came through the open gate in the fence and look around. " There you are! Mom and I were worried sick when you didn't come down for dinner. You weren't even in your room!"
" Ryan…" she said in a tight tone. " This is our neighbor, Nick Carter. One of his younger guests got lost in our yard and I had to show him the way back."
Ryan looked at Noel, his confusion evident on his face. " Show him the way? But Nani, you can't-"
" Ryan!" she almost screamed his name. " This is our neighbor, say hi."
It took a few moments but he caught on. " Oh, hello Mr. Carter."
Nick held his hand out and shook Ryan's. " Just call me Nick."
" Ryan Sands. I see you've already met Nani, but I hate to do this. Nani, it's time to go home. It's dark and you have to go see the doctor tomorrow, remember?" Ryan took his sister's hand and pulled her up to her feet.
" I hadn't realized it was so late Ry, it appears that I have to go Nick. I'll see you around, okay?" She waved and turned to leave.
" Bye Noel." Nick called before sitting in his chair again. He watched as the two walked away. " See you soon. Definitely soon." He said softly.
As she walked away Noel smiled. Her sensitive ears had heard his almost whispered words and she was glad because of them. I like him… he's really nice. She was pulled out of her thoughts by Ryan's voice.
" Want a piggy back home Nani?"
She smiled. " Sure Ry."
He hoisted her up and walked through the gate. " He doesn't know does he?"
" No. I don't want him to. I don't want anyone to know. But wait till you hear about my afternoon."
" Tell me all about it Nani, but first, we eat."
She laughed softly in his ear. " Of course, eat first."
Her laughter drifted on the wind across the yard and to Nick's ears. He listened until the door shut behind them and he laughed himself. " I like her."
