one year later…
" Nani! Come inside, it's dark."
Noel smiled in the dark as she heard her brother call her. " Ryan, I'm reading. Let me finish, okay?"
Ryan sighed with exasperation and brushed his dark brown hair out of his eyes. " It's almost nine, get your little butt in here before I come and get you. You have a final tomorrow!"
She waved a hand in the direction of his voice before returning to her book. Noel ran her sensitive fingers across the raised dots and giggled at the predicament of the books main character. " She should buy the damn jacket already- Ryan!"
She screamed as her brother slung her over his shoulder and marched towards the house. " I told you to come or I'd bring you in!"
" Ryan you big brute! Put me down right now or else I'll get you!"
Ryan laughed and put her down, his hazel eyes twinkling. " Fine, fine, but we're already inside." He closed the door behind them cutting off any of Noel's yells.

Behind the eight foot high privacy fence enclosing his house Nick Carter sat listening to the friendly fight between brother and sister. He chuckled as he heard the girls screams of protest as her brother picked her up and moved her inside. And when the door slammed and her screams were cut off he stood and moved to go inside himself. It had been only a week since the new neighbors had moved in next door and he still hadn't met them.
" Not because I'm nervous," he told himself. " She'd probably go nuts the second she saw my face."
In the many years of success from being a Backstreet Boy, Nick had dated often. But now, at twenty, he was beginning to tire of the endless tours, the constant singing, the ceaseless screams of the fans. There weren't many people who didn't know who he was, who didn't know what he did. And, unfortunately, the majority of the ones who truly had no clue were guys.
" Stupid," he muttered to himself as he opened the sliding glass door of the house he lived in by himself. " Stupid, stupid, stupid."
He shut and locked it, pulling the blinds to, and then sprawled on the black leather couch in his living room. " What are you so afraid of? She's a girl."
" Ha! Just a girl? You like her!" a voice said out of the darkness.
A light flicked on to reveal Nick's best friend sitting on the couch's matching recliner. He was wearing a goofy grin on his handsome face. " Nicky's got a crush, Nicky's got a crush- oomph!"
He was cut off by a pillow thrown squarely in his face. " Brian, shut up. Did I tease you when you first met Tina?" he asked referring to Brian's wife. " No, cause I'm cool like that."
Brian rolled his blue eyes and tossed the pillow onto Nick's feet. " Alright, alright. Jeez, can't a guy have some fun with his best bud?"
" No." came the tired reply. " Why'd you come over?"
Brian leaned back in his chair. " Cause I need your help."
Nick groaned. " Don't you always? Look, I already gave you a list of good mental hospitals for you to check out. What do you want me to do? Enroll you?" He rolled over onto his stomach, looked Brian in the eye, and said, " Go home."
Brian didn't blink. He was used to Nick's moods and ignored them. " I want to borrow your house Saturday. For a party."
Nick didn't reply, he merely closed his eyes and let his golden hair fall across his face.
" I want to throw a party for Tina. She told me something tonight… Are you paying attention Nick?"
Nick grunted in reply. Brian took it as a yes and continued, " In a few months we're going to have a little baby Littrell running around the house."
Nick sat up. " That's great Bri! I'm happy for you guys! Go ahead, you can have run of the whole house except for my room."
" Thanks, Nick. Really." Brian said, the relief of having a place to have the party. " I'll catch you tomorrow, okay Frack?"
Nick waved and watched as Brian left, closing and locking the front door behind him. That was one of the pluses of his house, the first floor was large and open. He could see everything down there, bar the kitchen. It was in an alcove by itself.
He sank down into the plush couch and closed his eyes. " I'll say hi to her tomorrow… Yeah, definitely tomorrow." He drifted off to sleep with a picture of the pretty Hawaiian girl on his mind.
