"Earth to Tyler! Where have you been?" May asks, snapping her fingers in front of her boyfriend's face. "You have been pretty zoned out throughout breakfast today."
"Sorry," Tyler responds, looking at his beautiful girlfriend. "I have a lot on my mind. I still can't believe everything that happened to Seth."
"Happened to Seth? Are you kidding me?"
"What?" he asks. "I'm not saying he's the victim here, but those twins really went too far last night."
"What are you talking about?" she asks, confused.
"As if it wasn't enough that he got disciplined by Kathy, Jason came up to him and threatened him flat out. I think it was all a misunderstanding, and from what I hear from Seth, Jason came on pretty strong, telling him he'd be watching him and what not."
"Jason? Are you sure?"
Tyler nods his head. "That's what Seth said."
"That doesn't sound like him at all."
"Well maybe you don't understand and know those two twins as you and everyone else think you do. I know Seth made a mistake, but he was just blinded by how much he cares for Kassandra."
May rolls her eyes. "I can't believe I'm actually hearing this from you. He tried to rape her!"
"He didn't do any more than what she was encouraging him!"
All May can do is stare at him.
"What?"
"I cannot believe you just said that. Kassie didn't do anything to encourage him to go that far. It was his hormones the entire time. You're just like him, aren't you? I can't believe it."
"What do you mean? Am I a good guy that often gets misunderstood? Yes."
"You know what? I don't think we should ever talk again. How could I have not seen this side of you?"
"What are you talking about? May, just because Seth is having a hard time with Kassandra is no reason for us to break up. It has nothing to do with us."
"You're right. It doesn't have anything to do with us, but you being so much like Seth has a lot to do with it. How can you not see how awful he is?"
"Because he isn't! He's just misunderstood!"
May sighs. "Well until you recognize the true nature of your best buddy, I can't be with you. Good-bye Tyler," she says, getting up with her tray.
"May, wait. Don't be this way."
"I can be any way I want to. If you can't see the terrible things he is doing, I have no reason to believe that you will not do the same things to me as he did to my best friend. It was nice while it lasted."
She turns around and leaves, heads to the trash line before heading out the door, leaving Tyler staring after her, wondering how things had gotten to be at that point so far, so fast.
"So that's it?" Kassandra asks, brushing May's hair in a comforting gesture.
"That's it," May responds, sitting back, sniffing. "I mean, if he can't see his friend for who he is, then I don't want anything to do with him. You know, the whole they are who their friends are thing."
"I'm so sorry May."
May shakes her head. "Don't be. It was for the best, really. I'm sorry you had to deal with this on top of everything else that has happened to you in the past few days."
"Don't be. I mean, you and Tyler wouldn't have broken up if it was not for me."
"Don't you dare blame this on yourself Kassie! Anyway, enough on this. What are your plans for the rest of tonight?"
"Well, considering that dinner wasn't too filling, I was thinking of seeing if the twins were up for fulfilling our delayed tradition."
May's eyes brighten up. "That sounds like a great idea!"
"Are you really up to it?"
"Definitely!"
"All right. I'll go find the guys and find out where Caitlin is so she can cover. Don't forget to check with Hillary as well."
"I won't, don't you worry! Oh and Kassie?"
Kassandra turns around. "Yeah?"
"Make sure to bring a towel in your bag, that super soaker we packed, and wear a bathing suit. Remember, it's our turn this year!"
Kassandra laughs. "Of course. See you tonight!"
Joey and Jason eagerly get into their car, start the engine, and wait for the girls to come out. "I can't believe we're actually getting off grounds tonight!" Jason exclaims. "It's been a really rough first week already."
"I know what you mean bro. At least I think Doug and I are starting to get along better," Joey replies. "We had a good talk last night, and I think he understands that I just suck at remembering names and I don't mean to come off as I do."
"That's good. I was getting worried about you two. Christian was concerned as well that you two would never find common ground."
Joey chuckles. "Well nice of you all to worry. I am fine though."
"Good."
The two turn their heads as they hear feminine laughter. "Hi boys," Kassandra calls out with a smile.
Joey inwardly groans. 'Man, times sure have changed! I don't think I've ever had my throat tighten around Kassie before this summer…'
'Man, tonight is going to be interesting,' Jason thinks to himself, giving the girls his best grin. 'Kassie, the ways in which you make my heart and breath change their pattern.'
'Well, this is going to be a fun night! There's no substitute for friends and tradition to lift the spirits!' Kassandra says to herself as she gets into the car. "Hi guys."
'Okay, now if something does not happen by the end of tonight between these three, I'm going to die of shock. Talk about electricity!' May thinks to herself, getting into the backseat next to Kassandra. 'What she has and yet doesn't seem to know is just too much!'
The four drive into town and park in their usual spot. As they pile out, Kassandra stumbles out of the car, but is luckily caught in the arms of Joey.
"You okay Kassie? I don't remember you being this clumsy," he remarks.
"Thanks Joey. Way to embarrass me more!" she replies. "But I am fine, thank you."
Joey laughs. "If you say so. Come on, ice cream awaits!" He grabs her hand and pulls her into the ice cream parlor behind him.
The four pile into a booth and ignore the menus that are in the center of the table. The waiter comes around and smiles. "Good evening. Can I take your order?"
"I'll have your extra-large sundae with chocolate ice cream, marshmallow syrup, nuts, whipped cream, and cherries on top. Kassandra, next to me, will have the large sundae with mint chocolate chip ice cream with chocolate sauce, whipped cream, and plenty of cherries. May will have the medium banana split with strawberry, chocolate, and French vanilla. And Joey over there will have the extra-large sundae with coffee ice cream, strawberry syrup, whipped cream, nuts, and only one cherry," Jason orders with a smile.
"I'm impressed. So that's your name huh? May?" the waiter asks with a smile.
May blushes. "Yes," she manages to squeak out.
"I'm Andrew. I'll be back with water after I place your order."
"Thanks."
As soon as the tall, Hispanic guy is out of sight, May lets out a small squeal as Kassandra elbows her. "Less than twenty-four hours free and you are attracting quite a lot of attention. Only you would be capable of that."
"Stop!" May pleads. "Andrew was just being nice."
"Right," Joey remarks. "If he gets too fresh, let me know. I'll make sure he doesn't make any unwanted moves on you."
"Why don't you invite him to the dance tomorrow night?" Jason suggests. "I mean, it is an open dance."
"Would that be appropriate?" she asks.
"See, I knew you were interested! Just do it," Kassandra remarks.
"Maybe. We'll see, okay? I mean, I just ended some type of relationship."
"This is true, but I think you are ready for it. Remember what I told you once. No risk, no gain."
"Why don't you follow your own medicine then?" May returns with an innocent smile.
"Oh, you are going to get it later," Kassandra mutters under her breath while Joey and Jason exchange a confused smile.
"So, are you four counselors at The Wild Woods? I think you look familiar," Andrew remarks, setting down their water.
"Right! We've been coming to this ice cream parlor for years and we are on our last summer of being counselors right now," Joey supplies.
"That must be fun. I wish I wasn't such a townie. The camp has always looked like fun."
"Well, why don't you come to our dance tomorrow night? It'll be a good time. Although, granted, there will be a whole slew of younger kids there but May will be there."
"Oh really? Sounds like fun. Count me in. I'll get the details from you later after I bring your order," Andrew says, giving May a big smile before heading to the back.
"You guys so suck!" May exclaims, trying her best to look outraged. "How could you do that?"
"What? It's not like you were trying to not flirt with the guy or anything," Joey remarks. "I mean, the chemistry between you two was spontaneous!"
"I agree with Joey May. You two definitely showed me love at first sight, or at least lust, is possible. Talk about fire!" Jason chimes in.
"You want to talk about chemistry? Maybe you two should look in the mirror!" May retorts back.
"What, we're on fire?" Joey asks with a smile. "I know I'm hot but I didn't think…"
May scoffs. "Right. I was talking about this thing that the two of you have for my best friend over here. Don't you deny it either."
"MAY!" Kassandra yells. "Stop it!"
"What? If they get to call me out on my stuff, I'm going to do the same to them. It's about time you three deal with it anyway. All of this flirting with nothing happening can only go on for so long!"
"I can't believe this."
"Well look, the two brothers are finally quiet. I guess that was the way to shut you guys up."
"What a way to do it May," Kassandra comments, looking at the twins who both seem to find the table very interesting.
"Sorry," May says in a lower voice. "I guess it just slipped."
Andrew comes back over with all of their ice cream and gives them a curious look. "What's with all the tension?"
"Oh nothing. May was just upset cause she wasn't able to ask you to the dance herself," Jason replies. "So you definitely in man?"
Andrew looks at May, who is turning a bright pink color in the face. "Sure. Tomorrow night at The Wild Woods?"
"8 PM. Khakis and a shirt will be fine."
"Great. Enjoy your ice cream. I'll be back with the bill later."
"Oww!" Jason exclaims, feeling a sharp kick under the table.
"So inappropriate," May grumbles.
"So pay back appropriate," Joey replies. "Nice one bro."
"Thanks," Jason says with a smile.
"Just like old times, only more vicious," Kassandra remarks, earning a smile and laugh from everyone. "Now, let's eat!"
"So, was all that embarrassment with Andrew worth getting his number?" Joey asks with a smile as the four walk along the trail.
"I guess," May admits. "However, you guys just really suck. I mean, I am the shy one here."
"I think Kassie is the most shy out of the four of us right now. What's wrong Kassie? You aren't talking much."
"Just thinking is all," she replies with a smile.
"About what I said earlier huh?" May asks quietly with a smile as the guys begin to look for wood for the end of the trail that was soon coming.
"Man, I have to say, you picked bad ammo to use tonight."
"Sorry. It just slipped. Besides, the three of you are making quite a chemistry together. You know you are going to have to deal with it sooner or later."
"But why? I mean, I really don't know what the difference is this summer. He never showed any affection for me before and now that he has, I just can't figure out how I am supposed to take it, you know?"
"And after the whole Seth thing, I don't think anyone can blame you. Just see what happens Kassie. However, what are you going to do about the other twin?"
"I don't know. I mean, all I've ever seen him as was my brother, you know? And now, to have him secretly pining for me is just weird."
"You know, I really don't envy your position, although I think many of the girls at the camp do. You have the two hottest guys there secretly fighting for your attention and affection. What else do you need for the perfect summer?"
"That's the thing. So far, I haven't had anywhere near a perfect summer. The whole Seth thing really messes that theory up."
"Look, I'm sure things will work out. Seth is out of your life, and you have new things to deal with. Don't try to take on too much at once."
Kassandra sighs. "I guess you are right."
May wraps an arm around her shoulder. "It'll be all right, trust me. Anyway, back to the task at hand. Let's hurry up and get to the cove before they get there."
A smile graces Kassandra's lips. "Oh yea! I almost forgot. Let's go!"
"All right girls, where are those marshmallows?" Joey asks, satisfied that the fire was under way.
"Right here," Kassandra says, passing him the pack and two long sticks.
"Mmm, roasted marshmallows," Jason says. "I have been dreaming of these for a while."
"Well, you will get some more once we get into our campfire weeks."
"True but nothing like the first one," he says, putting three marshmallows on the stick and holding it above the flames.
"He has a good point," May remarks, pulling her own out of the fire. "Yummy!"
Kassandra laughs. "I take it that it is good huh?"
"You bet!"
The four continue to roast marshmallows and laugh until May notes the time. "Hey, not to bust up the fun, but we have an hour to get back to camp to relieve our poor junior counselors."
"Hmm, just enough time for the last part of our tradition!" Joey exclaims, a mischievous gleam in his eyes.
"Oh no, I know what that look means," Kassandra says, immediately getting up and pulling May with her. "Run!"
The two girls shriek as Jason and Joey begin to take off after them down the cove until they reach a set of rocks. "Hey, what are you…?" Jason starts before being faced with the squirting side of a Super Soaker.
"Why you!" Joey starts as May starts shooting water at him, getting him right in the face.
At the same time, Kassandra starts shooting Jason, getting him in the chest. The guys start to run as the two girls begin chasing them down, laughing at the turn of events. "Payback!" May yells.
However, the twins exchange a look as they run and both, simultaneously, stop running and grab the gun out of the girls' hands. "Payback is indeed sweet," Joey agrees with a smile.
Unfortunately, both realize that the girls had used all the water and groan as both girls begin approaching them with smiles with their hands behind their backs. "Oh great, what do you two have now?" Jason asks, throwing away the gun and backing up. He feels cold water lapping at his feet and stops, realizing he and Joey had backed themselves up into the ocean's edge.
"Absolutely nothing, but you are right where we want you two!" Kassandra says, pushing Jason on the shoulders, into the ocean.
Joey screams as May does the same to him and both girls back up quickly, grabbing their water guns, watching as both guys get hit by a rather large wave for the shore and go back under.
"We better run," May comments, quickly running to her bag back where the fire is.
"No kidding," Kassandra says, following her best friend. "Perhaps all the way to camp?"
"Not a bad idea," May says, looking over to the ocean and seeing one of the twins emerging from the ocean, wet, but looking for revenge. "Now is a good time."
"At least they are both okay." Kassandra throws two towels towards the twins and yells, "See you two tomorrow!"
May laughs and the two take off, not bothering to look behind them at the twin brothers who are now wrapped in the towels and laughing.
"Man, I guess we should have expected that," Jason remarks.
"No kidding. Oh well. We have plenty of days to get them back," Joey returns.
"True. Let's take care of that fire. Let them run all the way back to camp thinking we are behind them. I think that's a good stat for our torture."
"Excellent idea."
Both guys begin to work at extinguishing the fire while warming themselves up as the two girls continue running down the path and back to camp, never slowing until they reach their separate cabins.
