Chapter 4

'I can't believe that I've found him! Nicholas is alive!' Carrie thinks to herself as she walks from her car into her house at the end of a deserted street. 'That is so unbelievable.'

"What is unbelievable?" a male voice asks as she enters her house. "Did you forget I was coming?"

Carrie looks up and smiles. "How could I forget when you never told me? It's good to see you Leonard."

"I'm glad to hear you say that. So what's so incredible that it put a bright smile on your face?"

"A discovery you could say."

"Hmm, could it be that you enjoyed your first day at your new job?" he asks, engulfing Carrie into a big hug.

"Better! I've found Nicholas!" she exclaims. "He came into the hospital from a car accident but I was able to help him both in the real sense and the magical sense. I am so excited!"

"Whoa! Hang on Carrie! What do you mean you've found Nicholas again? I thought he wasn't due to be back in this world for another year or two."

"I don't know but he is definitely here in that hospital healing from his wounds! His healing should be a lot faster than normal but I figured no single person would really notice."

"Carrie! Have you lost your mind? You just jeopardized your cover!"

"What was I supposed to do Leo? Let him die? You know I can't do that. Not after last time."

"Listen to me. I know this is rough for you but you need to be more careful. You can't just go up to him and think that he'll remember you. Remember, his memory is always erased each time he is reborn. You can't make it so obvious he is back either!" When Carrie just looks at him, Leo says, "HELLO! Don't you remember what happened last time to him? Don't you remember how he died?"

Carrie closes her eyes, getting a flashback to Nicholas on the floor, surrounded by his blood, a rose clutched in his hand. "You don't have to remind me so harshly Leo," she whispers, trying to escape the image.

"Listen, I'm sorry, but you have to remember what grave danger you put him. I thought we agreed that you would stop seeking him out and let him live his life. It is for the best for him. You can't keep entering his life each time he is reborn only to kill him. That's not fair to him or you. I don't know if I could afford to see you go completely depressed again if something should happen to him."

"Nothing will happen to him!"

"You don't know that. Carrie, I hate hurting you this way but you must remember that you do put him in great danger by coming into contact with him. I know you love him and that you always will but if you want the best for him, let him live this rebirth on his own."

"How can you ask that of me?"

"Because the Council will not be happy to find out that one of their best has fallen to her old ways, dedicating all of her time and energy to this guy she believes is her soul mate!"

"Screw the Council! He is my soul mate. I can't let him just slip by me, ever! My life is not complete without him."

"Carrie, come on! Think about what you are saying. The Council only wants what is best for you. They are here to protect you. They have your best interests at heart, as do I. You have to know that."

Carrie sighs. "I know. Life just got so simple for me between when he died and now that I've forgotten about the real threat there is in me being with him. It's just so hard when I go and see him. I couldn't help but heal him today when he was lying on that hospital bed."

"I completely understand but you know that could have caused some major damage right?"

"What do you mean?"

"By you using your powers of healing on a person, which is something you haven't done since the last time he was alive and injured, could have alerted Matthew of your new discovery. You did think about that before you healed him right?" Carrie could do nothing but stare at her friend and mentor. "I guess not. What am I going to do with you Carrie? I told you that healing a person comes with some risks. There is no way we have the power to save a human life besides changing him but healing we can do but there is a price, as there is a price to anything we do."

"You think Matthew knows?" she whispers, trying to rid herself of the idea that Matthew could discover Nicholas laying helplessly in the hospital and taking advantage of his lack of strength. "I didn't think of that."

"Well you should have. You know what Matthew is capable of. He's a strong male and will do anything to make sure you are always his if only by making sure no one else has you when he cannot."

"But I've told him countless times that he will never have my heart. I've told him that he will never be the One in my life."

"You think that helps? I don't think so. I have to go to the Council and discuss the situation. Perhaps we can better assist you this time."

"I thought you just said that I shouldn't have gotten involved."

"I did, however now that you are, there is nothing you can do but protect him now and as we are united together, we will try what we can to help you protect him. There will be a cost though, I warn you Carrie."

"I know. At this point, I really would do anything to save Nicholas."

"Let me go to the Council and see what I can do. In the meantime, you may want to keep a close eye on him from afar."

Carrie nods her head. "I will definitely be doing that. Thank you so much Leonard."

"Anything for my girl. See you soon Carrie. Take care of yourself."

"I will. Bye!" she says as Leonard vanishes into mist. 'Now, how do I protect Nicholas?'
