"So tell me again why you're auditioning for this musical," Chris says to his friend Justin. "I mean, I thought you were rougher than this!"
"Shut up Chris! If Joey can do Rent, I can certainly try out for Mamma Mia!" Justin replies, regretting the fact that he asked Chris to come with him.
"But Joey has grown up on the stage!"
"I think I've done that myself."
"Acting in front of a camera is a whole lot different than acting in front of a live audience."
Justin looks at Chris. "Duh? What do you think we've been doing these past years as a group at these concerts?"
Reluctantly, Chris says, "You got me there. Listen man, you know I'm just giving you a rough time. I fully support you."
"Right," he says, trying not to let Chris see how nervous he really felt. True, theater wasn't a big part of his history but he felt that he was qualified for this role.
"Number 418?" a lady calls out, making Justin jump up and walk to the lady, without a word to Chris.
Chris laughs at the obvious show of nervousness, which was so uncharacteristic of his curly haired friend. "Good luck buddy!"
Justin looks back and smiles then disappears through a heavy wood door. He's directed to the side of the stage where a petite girl was in the middle of her audition. 'Wow, she has an incredible voice,' he thinks as she finishes her song and completes her dance movement.
The piano stops and there's silence. "Thank you. We'll post our decisions tomorrow morning. Next!"
'Here goes nothing,' Justin thinks to himself as he steps onto the stage.
There is a cough and Justin can tell they are whispering about something. He waits until a man says, "Mr. Timberlake I presume?"
"Yes sir," Justin responds.
"What role are you auditioning for?"
"The role of Sky."
There was more whispering. "You do realize that Sky is not a big role vocal-wise, correct?"
Justin decides not to let them get the better of him. "Yes, I do realize that sir but I wanted to try something new that would give me a chance to sing but to also act."
"Good enough. Do you have one of your boy band songs to sing for us?" the man asks, followed by a snicker.
'Stay cool Justin,' he thinks to himself. "No sir. I have a Broadway tune all prepared."
"Well then. Give your music to the pianist and let's get this audition on the road."
The pianist smiles at him and waits until Justin is back in the middle of the stage. He counts off and Justin begins to sing and move with all of his heart.
"Mary? You aren't going to believe this! I actually didn't throw up!" Rebecca gushed to her friend on her cell phone. "I was so nervous, I thought I would in the middle of it all!"
"I'm so proud of you! You really didn't throw up!" Mary replies. "Then again, I don't think I ever have seen you throw up."
Rebecca laughs. "It doesn't matter. I just have to hang in there and wait until tomorrow's postings! Are you available for dinner or something?"
"Sure. Max's?"
Rebecca made a face at the mention of that restaurant but knew it was her friend's favorite place to eat. "Fine. See you in forty minutes."
"See ya," Mary says, hanging up the phone.
'Please God, let me get this role!' Rebecca prays before leaving the building and getting into her car. She turns on her radio and meditates for a few minutes, calming her nerves and letting her mind focus on what lies in front of her. Unfortunately, as she pulls out of the parking lot, a guy and his friend are too busy talking and walk right into the path of Rebecca's car. Rebecca spots them and slams on her brakes, successfully stopping the car. Apparently though, her front bumper touched the guy's leg because he looked at her and screamed, "You idiot!"
Rebecca sighs. 'Here we go.' She stops the engine and gets out of the car. "Are you okay?" she asks the two guys.
The guy who her car made contact with looks at her. "You should watch where you're going! You could have killed us both!"
"I'm sorry! It could have helped if you two had watched where you were going! You didn't even stop to look if a car was coming."
"Ever heard about how the pedestrian has the right of way? You are the type that gives women the bad stigma of being bad drivers!"
"Excuse me? I don't think I heard you right," Rebecca says, becoming fully enraged. "Perhaps you should learn how to be an open minded male and open your eyes to what is around you!"
The guy's friend seems to realize that this is going no where and that his friend needed to just be taken away from the situation. He puts his hand on the guy and says, "Dude, let's just go. You weren't hurt, her car is fine, end of story. This isn't worth the consequences you know will happen later if you continue."
The guy nods his head. "You're right. Just watch where you are going in the future, okay?"
Rebecca just rolls her eyes and gets back into her car as she sees the two walk off to their car. 'What a creep! I can't believe he talked to me like that! Ugh!' Rebecca wanted to scream but knew that wouldn't help. 'Wait until Mary hears about this episode!'
Forty minutes later she arrives at Max's, relieved to find that Mary is already seated in a booth, waving to her. As Rebecca sits down, Mary looks at her funny.
"What?" Rebecca snaps.
"Geez. What's wrong with you? I was just going to ask why you were late. It's not like you at all."
"Don't even get me started on that," Rebecca says, opening the menu. The two girls give the waiter their order and Rebecca sighs. "Sorry Mary. I shouldn't have snapped at you like that."
Mary looks at her friend with a concerned look. "What's happened?"
"Well, after the audition, I relaxed a little in my car and meditated a bit. Well, when I was pulling out of the parking lot, this creep wasn't looking where he was walking while talking to his stupid friend and I had to slam on my brakes not to run him over. My bumper tapped his leg I think and he went off on me, saying I gave women the title of bad drivers and stuff. He was just such a creep!"
"Was he cute?" Mary asks.
Rebecca stares at her friend in disbelief. "Are you kidding me? I just said the guy was a creep. Why would it matter if he was cute or not?"
"I was just wondering. You know, trying to find that one good thing out of the situation."
"The good thing about the entire situation is that it happened after my audition and not before. If it had happened in reverse order, I would have definitely been messed up for the audition. Can we talk about something else? Maybe, how your blind date went last night?"
Mary decides her friend isn't in the best of moods and agrees to change subject. "Well, to be honest he was pretty charming. I don't know though. He could be some creep on the second date."
"Second date?" Rebecca asks. "Hmm…"
The girls continue to eat dinner and chat until the waiter comes by and gives them a dirty look for staying at his table so long after they were done. Mary laughs. "We better go girl or this guy may kill us."
Rebecca laughs. "You're right. Catch you tomorrow?"
"Of course! I do want to find out how that audition went!"
"Ugh, don't remind me. I'll give you a call tomorrow then! See ya!"
Mary waves good-bye and the two friends part ways.
