Ricardo Barros
Ricardo was born in São Paulo, Brazil, where he started his musical studies on the piano. He turned his interest to Early Music and in 1989 entered UNICAMP, State University of Campinas. He studied with Dr Helena Jank, graduating with a BMus degree in 1993. In 1990 he founded the Ars Nova Ensemble, performing in the major music halls in that Country. He was a member of several other groups, as Aphetti e Sagitta Trium.
Ricardo attended various harpsichord master-classes with renowned musicians such as Jacques OGG, Ketil HAUGSAND, Christophe ROUSSET, Kenneth GILBERT, Christopher HOGWOOD and Andreas STAIER. As a baroque dancer he attended master classes and summer courses given by Jürgen SCHRAPE, Isabel GONZAGA and Christine BAYLE.
In 1993 Ricardo was awarded a scholarship from The British Council, which enabled him to study post-graduation at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London. At this same school he studied with Christopher KITE and Neal PERES DA COSTA (harpsichord), and Madeleine INGLEHEARN (Early Dance). In 1994 he co-founded the ensemble Mascharada, performing intensively around Great Britain, including concerts in venues such as the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and The National Gallery in London. Ricardo had his solo "début" during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, playing the complete works for harpsichord by Pancrace Royer in the World famous 1769 Taskin harpsichord, at St Cecilia’s Hall - The Russell Collection of Early Keyboard Instruments.
After the return to Brazil, Ricardo joined the Orquestra de Câmara da UNESP, both as harpsichordist and co-director. He developed a career both as solo and chamber musician. He has often given master-classes and summer schools in baroque dance. In 1995 he founded the Companhia MERCURIUS de Música e Danças Barrocas in Brazil, the first and unique group dedicated to the performance of baroque dances in that Country, of which he was director and choreographer.
In 1996 Ricardo received a scholarship from CAPES (Brazilian Ministry of Education) to study post-graduation at the Royal Academy of Music in London with Neal PERES DA COSTA and Laurence CUMMINGS. He has appeared in concerts with Trio Tagarela and was a founding-member of Ensemble Puttanesca, and also performed in the BBC Radio 3 series – Music Restored and the Barcelona International Early Music Festival amongst other venues. Ricardo is in high demand for his continuo playing in concerts around Britain.
At the moment Ricardo divides his time between playing and researching the French stage dances from the Seventeenth and Eighteenth centuries.
