"Detail from Whitetail Fawn"

Gouache on board by Lynn Ponto-Peterson
This painting is still in progress

"While walking in the woods one day with
camera in hand, I ran across some chipmunks
playing on a fallen tree. I bent down
to focus my camera and out of the
corner of my eye, I saw a flash of
color. I slowly looked up and saw a small
fawn laying 30 feet away. I focused in
on her to get the shot of a lifetime,
but I couldn't, I knew I would scare her away.
Instead I sat slowly down on the leaf blanketed
floor. I watched her for a long time, she got up,
played, and nibbled blades of grass, until she
finally caught a whiff of my presence and
fled deep into the woods. I quickly photographed
her nap area and ran back to my studio
to begin the painting that she inspired"
