A Short Biography of Maud Hart Lovelace
Probably written by Maud herself
This is from the "About the Author" section of
The Black Angels, Maud's first novel, published in
1926, which was before she wrote the Betsy-Tacy books.
Maud Hart Lovelace was born in 1892 in Mankato, Minnesota. Her father was
Thomas W. Hart, for many years the treasurer of his county. There is a
legend that the future Mrs. Lovelace began her literary career almost as
soon as she could write; and there is still in Mankato a maple tree which
formerly housed the young writer's earliest works. At the age of ten she
began submitting stories, although the first of these, written, it is said,
on a brilliant pink paper, was never heard from. Her first acceptance came
at the age of seventeen and she has been contributing to various magazines
ever since. She was married during the war to Delos W. Lovelace, the writer,
and their home, when they are not traveling north, east, south or west, is
on Lake Minnetonka in Minnesota.
