I learned an important lesson tonight. And in my ten weeks on this Earth, it is without a doubt, something I will remember for all the rest of my weeks on this Earth.

My mom and I go outside alot. There are things that I am supposed to do outside, and it seems to keep things going alot smoother if I remember what I am supposed to do inside, and what I am supposed to do outside.

It was just beginning to get dark, when all of a sudden, there were lights every where!
Not big lights like there are in the house,
but little lights.
They blinked on and off, and I sat and watched them blink.
Mom watched me watch them, and she smiled when one would blink close to me and make me jump.
I knew that they couldn’t be anything dangerous, or mom would have made them go away.. Or, she would have taken me back in the house.
She’s funny that way, always making sure nothing hurts me.
All of a sudden, one blinked right next to my ear!
I jumped as it blinked, and then watched it fly away, kind of stopping and starting in the air as it flew.
It blinked again, just a little ways from me. I got up and followed it.
It blinked again! I watched it again.
I have seen pictures my mom has of dragons that fly and have fire coming from their mouths, but these things were awfully little to be dragons.
Something made me want to catch the tiny little thing.
It blinked again, and I jumped and snatched it right out of the air!
Oh, MY!! I had never caught anything before! Now, what was I going to do with it?
Well, since almost everything else I had ever had in my mouth before tasted good when I ate it, it took me about two seconds to decide that I should eat this thing.
The first couple of bites were not too bad, but then there was the most awful taste in my mouth that I could have ever imagined.
It tasted worse than the leaves I had torn off of mom’s flowers and eaten.
It tasted worse than the sticks I had chewed on.
It tasted worse than dad’s socks.
It just tasted worse than anything I had ever tasted. Period.
I tried to get the creature out of my mouth. I couldn’t get it out.
Finally, after doing some tricky tongue twisting, and alot of pawing at my mouth, I managed to get the creature spit out.

I learned some very important lessons tonight.
These blinking creatures are called fireflies.
But most importantly I learned:

Fireflies blink.
Fireflies are easy to catch.
Fireflies can be chewed up.
Fireflies taste terrible.
Fireflies are not easy to spit out.
Fireflies, chewed up and spit out, still glow.

I will tell you if I learn any more lessons, so you won’t make the same mistakes I have made.
