COUNTRY # 1:
NEDERLAND (the Netherlands)
In the fifties it was quite normal in Nederland that
a child got a piggy bank as a present on his/her birthday or at Sinterklaas
(Dec. 5th). From the "pocket money" the child got every week
he/she was supposed to save a lot. Those piggy banks were ceramic and there
was no hole in the bottom, so you had to break the piggy bank to get the
money out. But I remember that when I needed some money and did not wanted
to break the piggy bank, I used a knife, stuck it in the money slot, hold
everything upside down and shook the lot. Then some money came out.
Ther were also Saving Banks that gave away piggy banks
to children with the name of the bank on it. In our collection we have
several examples from piggy banks from Nederland and abroad.

- 's-Gravenhage N.V. Nationaal Spaarfonds "Die
bi mi spaert, gheluck vergaert" (ceramic, green), see above
- Rabobank (plastic, red with white flowers, built in
AM radio)
- Algemene Bank Nederland (plastic, red, mixed form
between apple and pig, with green leaf on top)
- Rabobank (plastic, white; Tresor Verlag/Jurjen de
Vries B.V. Leeuwarden)
- Amro Bank (plastic, grey with big red ears, white
node and tail; Poul Wiluumsen A/S Denmark)
- Rabobank (plastic, light green; Oy MK-Tuote AB, Finland)
Some of the Commercial Banks above are now part of
a bigger bank. There are also other companies or shops who have piggy banks
with their names on it:
- Stafac Virginiamycine "spaar met de echte groeibevorderaar"
(plastic, rose, metal mock with key)
- California (ceramic, orange, with orange fruit skin
and sliced fruit parts on the sides and in the nose of the pig)
Special piggy bank products from Nederland are the
handpainted Delft blue piggy banks, ceramic white with blue motives like
flowers ans windmills on the side.
Also in Deutschland (Germany) there are a lot of piggy
banks with names from Commercial banks on it.
