My Haragala campaign
Last updated: 1998-03-17
The campaign should of course have a fancy name. I haven't
come up with any such yet, so the Haragala campaign will
do for now. As mentioned on the Glorantha
page, the player characters are crew members on the Blue Dolphin,
a Haragalan tallship.
Owning a tallship is the mark of Captaincy, the highest social
distinction on Haragala, obsessed with the sea and sailing. But a
tallship is built for war, it's sleek and fast and manoeuverable,
but woefully inadequate for carring cargo. So in order to pay for
the upkeep of the ship, and the lifestyle expected of a Captain
(note the capital C), the owner must also engage in
mercantile activities. A Captain usually owns a small merchant
fleet in addition to the tallship. They also have various rights
to impose taxes and customs. The details of this vary around
Haragala, but in Malgo on the east coast, where the Blue Dolphin
is based, the results of the annual tallship race determine the
allocation of customs and tax opportunities.
Captain Vatembath of Blue Dolphin is a poor man, for being
a Captain, actually rather deep in debt at the start of the
campaign. The sinking of his two trading ships in an unnatural
storm last year certainly didn't help. So, like all poor Captains
he has to resort to unusual means to make ends meet: privateering,
pearl diving expeditions and other adventuresome endeavours.
The characters
- Surgeon Fiaroa, the ship's surgeon and cook (cutting one
kind of meat is no different than cutting another kind of meat).
- Magician Zaragiki, assistant sunscope operator and a
semi-distant relative of Admiral Zaragiki, an influential figure
in Malgo.
- Soldier Tjawai, now a marine, she used to be a juvenile
delinquent. Rather deadly with a great spear.
- Ranger Tali, navigator, outlook and general sea ranger
with a plethora of useful skills.
