2nd Ozeki Annual Ranchu Show 2003

The Ozeki Ranchu Club members started their first day of the New Year very busy. By 10 am, they had completed the setup to prepare for their annual Japanese Top View Ranchu Competition in the Tanglin Shopping Mall.

The objective of the competition was for the club members to pit their best fishes against each other and to promote the refine hobby of top view Japanese Ranchu appreciation to the public. The competition was the final showdown after months of effort in grooming their fishes. The condition of the fish directly reflects on the skill level of its respective owner. It was also an opportunity to view each other's collection and to share the finer details of the techniques of keeping the top view Japanese Ranchus.

The early morning setup in Tanglin Mall

Curious crowds gathered around the competition area, amazed by the show of more than 60 beautiful Japanese Ranchus swimming in various tubs. The congregation of so many Japanese Ranchus mixed together in common tubs was not a scene to be taken for granted! Much discipline must be observed in raising the fishes and preparing them for competition to prevent the outbreak of diseases after the show.

While the judges work out the scores, the other Ozeki members were kept busy with answering queries from the public. After the results were worked out, the winners in each category are labeled and each Ranchu was displayed in a round white metallic basin for public viewing.

The Nisais (2 year old fishes)

Inevitably, the event attracted much attention and queries from the public as not many people were accustomed to appreciating a Ranchu from the top view. To help the public to understand better, the Club also ran the videos of the All Japan Ranchu Show (AJRS) and the house visit to the grand master breeder in Japan. With the help of the videos, the Ozeki members explained to the public on how the Japanese Ranchus were kept in green algae water and how the competitions were conducted in Japan. Many members of the public were amazed and enlightened on the correct way of keeping top view Japanese Ranchus. From their feedback, they were misled with cryptic methods preached and practiced commercially.

The line-up

The show ended at 4:30pm and the Ozeki members had completely packed up their fishes and clean up the show area by 4:50pm. Their fishes will be brought back to recuperate from the stress of the competition. Under the good care of the Ozeki members, these fishes would likely to stage their return to endeavor for the year 2004 competition again.

Overall, the show had been a great success. The Ozeki Ranchu Club has attracted more public queries than the previous year and the club will be following up with interested public who wish to know more about the hobby.
