The All Japan Ranchu Show (AJRS) 2002

The Venue - Senri Hankyu Hotel in Osaka

Our club members have visited the All Japan Ranchu Show (AJRS) consistently over the last 5 years. All the activities of the show are usually captured on video for the benefit of our members.

The AJRS is held annually on the 3rd of November and its venue is rotated between the cities of Osaka, Nagoya and Tokyo. This year’s show on (Nov 2002) was held at the Senri Hankyu Hotel in Osaka.

The Ranchu competitions normally started out at the club, the prefecture and district levels around September – October each year and culminates at the AJRS in November where fishes from all over Japan compete for the “World Cup” in Ranchu rearing.

Japanese Ranchus are judged through various criteria from a ‘top view’ perspective. There are three basic categories in the competition namely, Tosai (yearlings), Nisai (2 yrs old and above) and Oya (3 yrs and above).

Oya fishes in a staging tub awaiting selection.

Fishes of the same category are staged in big tubs like these before the first round of selection. There are normally over 1,500 fishes competing in the 3 categories and amazingly no one has ever lost a fish! Despite the large number of entries, this is a gentleman’s sport where trust and integrity is highly regarded.

Each fish is unique and their owners have no problem identifying their own. It helps as the organizers also require that owners produce photos of their fishes before they’re collected.

Top view Japanese Ranchus are best appreciated with the round and white metallic bowls as shown in the photograph. Winners are ranked and labelled for public viewing thereafter.

The traditional Sumo ranking system is adopted for the winners of the competition. For example, the top fish is know as East Ozeki (“Dong Da Kuan”) and the runner up is called West Ozeki (“Xi Da Kuan”). "Da Kuan" iterally translates to "The Great Barrier", signifying the achievement in attaining the top Ozeki positions.
