Kiryuu Touga, president of the Student Council. Campus Playboy. The Devil's servant, these are all his titles. Others would include, slime bucket, manipulator, and various other insults. Is he really as bad as he seems? We'll endevour to give an unbiased evaluation of the President. |
In the beginning of the series, Touga is introduced as a suave, debonaire type, girls swooning and crowded around him. But even with that surrounding him, his thoughts are elsewhere. Touga knows what he wants, and he doesn't mind chasing after it to possess it, even if it is the only girl to outright refuse him. Utena intrigues Touga, she refuses to behave like the other girls who flaunt all over him. In fact, she'd rather not be in his company at all. That just gives him all the more reason to chase after her. Touga prefers to study his opponents and use their weaknesses to his advantage, something the other Student Council members rarely do for a duel. Touga watches Utena's duels closely, and when his turn arrives, he snatches the Sword of Dios and the Rose Bride away with ease, despite the Power of Dios being bestowed upon Utena. But just as victory had been sweet, defeat is equally bitter, and Touga is sent into a depression after Utena takes back what was taken from her, both her identity and her friend. |

As Touga's depression continues, his younger sister, Nanami, takes over as the head of the Student Council. Touga remains out of most of the Black Rose Saga, and doesn't emerge again until the Ohtori Akio Saga. Touga seems to have done quite a bit of thinking during his state of depression and now actively participates with Akio in manipulating the other Student Council members into dueling once again with Utena. But why would Touga aid in such a dastardly plot? Touga wants to be the one who holds the winning hand in the end, and the only way to do that is to follow after the most powerful player in the game. And the duel Revolution is rapidly approaching. Touga wants to be the one take the prize, so Utena must be removed from her rather comfortable position. |

A problem remains, however. Touga is beginning to realize that he actually does love Utena, despite the trouble he causes her. Akio knows this, and decides to take Utena from him. Even if only out of concern for Utena, the air between Touga and Akio becomes uncomfortable....and Touga begins to listen to what Saionji has been telling him. Perhaps he too has been nothing more than puppet like the others? Knowing it's already too late to refuse dueling again, Touga challenges Utena, in hopes of winning, if only to spare her the pain of having to suffer through the last of the duels. However, this too ends in failure, and Touga is forced to watch the only girl who changed his way of thinking go to face the destiny that was contrived from the day she recieved her Rose Crest. |
Without knowing what goes on in the arena the night Revolution takes place, Touga and the other members of the disbanded Student Council keep a vigil, waiting for what may or may not come. In the end, it would be inevitable, something would change. Or had it already happened? Even after the duel has come and gone, things return to normal, or have they? Utena still brough about a change, even in him. Is it possible that even after all that happened, does he remember the name Utena? It would be hard to imagine that he would've forgotten it. |
