Saionji Kyoichi longed for the power of eternity to make the girl of his dreams happy, however unable to express himself, he resorted to bringing her harm instead of the happiness she so longed for. |

At the beginning of the series, he's presented as a pushy, arrogent, egotistical, and abusive Victor of the Duels. This, however does not last long. At least the Victor of the Duels part. This doesn't sit well with him. He challenges Utena again, and fails. He even goes so far as to kidnap Anthy to revieve the Power of Eternity, but again, he fails. Saionji also participates in the Student Council as the Vice President. However, he does very very little actually in the Student Council. One would think that he wears the title like his tailor made uniform. However, for his inappropriate behavior, he is expelled from Ohtori Academy. As Touga said, "The rules of the Crest are to be explicitely followed." To do otherwise, is to be ousted from the face of the society's world. |

Saionji isn't completely without sympathy, nor does he like his lonely existence. He makes a couple attempts to befriend Utena, both times she brushes him off. Saionji is also in habit of carrying an "exchange diary" with Anthy, expressing his affection for her, and what he precieves as her affection for him. Perhaps he has so deluded himself into believing that Anthy loves him back that he'll believe anything he hears from her. Touga, however, sees fit to put an end to that, if not for his own good, even if it is percieved as a betrayal and cruel. |

Ah, yes, Touga. Saionji's best friend. Is he really? Or is the betrayal that happened all those years ago just in Saionji's head? After all, Saionji is prone to delusions and will believe nearly anything anyone tells him. He's also obssessed with his status, and having been forced into a considerably lower position in the Duelist Ring, he doesn't take it very well. However, Akio seems to clear up his delusions about Anthy. After all, she really has no will of her own, and it's about time he was clued in. Touga also finally tells him that it was Akio who saved the girl from their past, and that girl is the one he so dispises, Tenjou Utena. |

So Saionji takes it upon himself to help Touga, now that the big picture has been laid out for him to see. He doesn't like what he sees, and he cannot let the man that is his childhood friend continue to be duped as he had been. His hatred for Utena also seems to melt under the sun, as he realizes just what it is she's going up against. |
Touga, however, still hopes to save Utena from a such a fate, and even when Saionji accompanies Touga to the final of the Rose Duels as his Bride, Touga could not prevail. Fearing what the future would bring, and just what the Revolution is, the Student Council meets for one last time, as tribute to Tenjou Utena, the only one who had the power to free them all. Did he forget her name in the end? Not likely, after all, it was she that drove he and Touga apart, and it was she who brought them back together. |
