Kaoru Miki is one of the sweetest of characters in the series, being only 13, he seems to know his place fairly well, and how he stands with others. He's nothing short of respectful and polite to his peers, though the only one he seems to show any malice towards is his twin sister. The two of them had a happy childhood, as far as he was concerned, he so loved playing the piano in their little garden. And while Miki was the only one of them that really could play, his sister, Kozue, often just played for him, despite some letters she would recieve from the neighborhood boys. However, things didn't stay that way. |
Someone had requested that the pair play at a concert. Kozue was hesitant, since she knew she couldn't play that well. Miki reassured her that everything would go alright, that she didn't need to worry. However, Kozue's misgivings were proven correct, and Miki fell ill. Forced to play alone, Kozue felt horribly embarrassed and ran away. Quite coldly, her father wouldn't even budge to comfort her. The division began then, and Miki blamed himself for what happened. And ever since then, he longed to get back what he lost, however, Kozue made things difficult, the feeling of betrayal still tearing at her. |
Miki is rather polite and nice to the world around him, while paying no particular interest in it otherwise. Many people seem to know him, however, he seems to have few honest friends. Utena has no problem befriending him, and she certainly has no problem when he expresses interest in Anthy, other than for dueling. Nanami, being in the same grade, also seems to know him pretty well, and Touga has gained enough respect and familiarity with Miki that he feels comfortable telling him his problems. Miki develops something of a crush on Anthy when he discovers that she can play the song he wrote as well as he can. Touga convinces him that the only way to save her playing is if he wins her himself, because at any time, Utena could tell her to stop playing the piano and not see him anymore. However, Miki forgets that Utena wouldn't actually tell her that.... So Miki feels compelled to duel with Utena, despite his earlier quip about not wanting to. He's a very amiable fencer, having learned under Arisugawa Juri. Utena seems to be an even match for him, however, Anthy cheers for Utena (I'm assuming that doesn't happen often, especially in a duel) and that distraction costs Miki his rose. Utena, quite upset by his change of mind, leaves the arena. Anthy nicely suggests that he and she play again sometime. |
Miki, Utena, and Anthy remain friends throughout the series, Miki and Utena will often be seen spying on people, everyone in Ohtori loves a good drama, and those two are no exception. Anthy seems comfortable enough around Miki and Utena, since those two duelists are the only ones who seem to care anything about her. Kozue and Miki have a few more meetings, one in the Black Rose saga, and again in the Ohtori Akio saga. Both times, the twins are overcome by Utena's blade, and the second time, the friction between the two has lessened a bit. Both insult each other, but at least now it's out in the open. Miki also seems to have changed his mind about who his affection is directed at by the end of the series, and Juri teases at him a little. Utena doesn't seem to mind though. He, like the others is concerned for Utena and the future of Ohtori when the Duel for Revolution takes place. He like the others, resumes his normal life, away from the student council. Does he remember the name Utena? It would be hard to forget her, especially since Anthy had not left so quickly after she did. Perhaps having the Bride around reminded him of her. |
