Malcolm Lawler's  1932 Ford Tudor

1932 Ford Tudor

Having an urge to build a street rod that would be noticed and yet be practicable for a family of five I spoke to Dick Bushell at Valla in 1988. He had just imported a 32 Tudor body and wanted to sell it . We drove up to Yamba from Valla and I had a look at this body. It was a piece of shit. Cut in half for transport reasons out of shape and full of rust in the roof and side. But cheap. I'll take it. But I didn't let Hanna see it . Dick welded the body back together and Tony Webster transported it back to Sydney. Big Al helped me truck it back to Canberra. I started collecting parts and tools to build the car, I was in no hurry as I still had the Dodge. I had a plan to build the car high tech, super smooth and do it all myself. I new this would be hard but what isn't in this sport. Several panel beaters looked at the body and turned up their noses. Panel beaters are shit heads. I started by straightening the body out and then started on the chassis, lengthened and pinched in the front the same width as the grille, Tube axle on coil overs, 9" Ford triangulated four bars in the rear, all made by me, C'd rear rails and low. The motor was next 355 Chev and TPI and 5 speed. I continued on with fixing the body, panel beating where I could, building the hidden hinges and fitting every thing under the back seat. This car was to have no visible clips screws or bolts holding things on. Fitting air conditioning and electric windows. digital dash., remote door locks all took time. Throw in a new house and it's now 1997. The car finished and it's first run wins entrants choice. The ironic part about building a car for the family is that they are now grown up and they take it out and leave me at home.
