Interesting Facts

Below are tidbits of information I have picked up along the way. Some of these things you may already know, some you may not. If You are a fairly new race fan, you will learn something. If you have been around since Ben Hur drove the Roman Pizza sponsored chariot, you probably already know this stuff!

NASCAR became officially incorporated Feb 1, 1948

Richard Petty has the most wins in a row, 10 in 1967

Bobby Hillin, at age 17 is the youngest driver to begin a Winston Cup career

Hillin drove in the "World 600" just two days after he graduated high school

Cale Yarborough scored the most points in one season under the current points system--5000 points in 1977

The record margin of victory is 14 laps, set by Ned Jarrett at the "Southern 500", Sept 1965

The Sept 1951 race at Darlington started 82 cars

Dale Earnhardt is the only driver to win the Winston Cup Championship in only his second year on the circuit

The infamous "Pass in the Grass" wasn't a pass at all, but a great job of blocking by Earnhardt over Elliott

Richard Petty's 200 wins by Manufacturer

The current Winston Cup points system was implemented in 1975,

Bill Elliott is the fastest qualifier at any track--212.809 mph, at Talledaga Superspeedway in April, 1987

Tim Flock had a pet monkey named "Jocko" that rode with him

The first battle between brothers for Rookie of the Year was Jeff and Ward Burton, 1994

Al Keller drove a Jaguar, the only imported car to have a Nascar victory, on June 13, 1954 at Linden Airport, Linden, New Jersey
