Sightings and Snapshots. . .
April 25, 2002
Had a beautiful male Evening Grosbeak at the back feeder. I love their brilliant plumage. Regal!
First white-crowned sparrow of the season on the front walk this afternoon!
February 28, 2002
Boys were out sledding on the pond and saw the resident moose family up on the hill~~bull, cow, and baby.
February 11, 2002
Saw Moma Moose and baby out in the field.
January 21, 2002
We were so sorry today to have one of our visiting grouse crash into our back sliding glass door and pass on.
January 17, 2002
We have from one to three beautiful ruffed grouse coming to feed on the wild rosehips out our back door each day.
January 16, 2002
We saw three coyotes in the field in the middle of the day today! They were so beautiful. Rare to see them out like that. We usually just hear them howling in the evenings.
Not long after the coyotes passed through, a moose followed almost the same path across the snow-covered field. The moose trotted along, dipping his large head every so often to "sniff" and scoop a little snow. It was an odd sight--he really seemed to be trailing the coyotes.
December 25, 2001
Christmas morning! Two moose in the backyard!
December 13, 2001
We watched two deer trotting up the center of our road--with all the snow it must have seemed the easiest route to take!
December 11, 2001
The boys encountered two moose over on a nearby road as they went up to see some friends. Boys & moose politely went their quiet ways!
December 3, 2001
Two moose visited us in the backyard.
October 7, 2001
We had twin fawns in the side yard today. They are small for this time of year, but so beautiful!
October 1, 2002
We saw a pair of bluebirds at our birdhouse out front today--they'd long since finished nesting and raising their babies, so it is odd to see them dropping back by.
We had a beautiful tiny, tan tree frog "hanging around" on the side of a window frame out front today. He was basking in the sunshine. I love frogs.....especially the tiny ones like this guy. Although, I also like the big fat lumpy toads, too!
- March 4, 2001
- Passed three deer on the hillside just after we pulled
out of our driveway early this morning. They were happily
snacking on the twigs and bushes recently exposed by the
melting snow.
-
- February 28, 2001
- Just off the highway from our house, we got to see an
entire flock of two dozen or more wild turkeys meandering
through a farmyard near the river.
-
- February 28, 2001
- Three moose on the road while our oldest boy went out to
check the mail--he stood there waving and talking to them
just for fun. These fellas sure are laid back!
-
- February 25, 2001
- Two moose were visiting the yard today when Jim pulled in
the driveway--they were just behind a couple of trees, so
I ran out to show him--only 30 yards away and they didn't
mind either the car or us talking about them.
-
- February 24, 2001
- An osprey was visiting the still-frozen pond--sizing it
up for the "fishing season."
-
- January 29, 2001
- Three moose trotted through the backyard just now--they
were startled from their seclusion by a neighbor's
snowmobile cruising through. Their eyes were *wide* and
they just crossed the yard into the grove of pine
saplings at the edge of our yard and disappeared like the
baseball players into the corn in "Field of Dreams."
-
- January 24, 2001
- Bald eagle flew right over our home--circled the field
out front before continuing west.
-
- January 20, 2001
- Young moose just twelve feet from our window--got some
great pictures. He hung around and nibbled on the Oregon
grape and other vegetation that stuck out of the snow.
-
- January 17, 2001
- Saw a beautiful hawk and four magnificent bald eagles on
a drive out around the lake.
-
- January 16, 2001
- Sixteen elk......a few bulls in the herd.....all in a
line crossing the back field out our front window!
Spectacular!
-
- January 13, 2001
- Four moose.......including at least one youngster! We
have about 15 to 18 inches of frozen snow on the ground,
with maybe an inch of fresh snow on top. The snow is just
gently falling, and the sun peeks through every now and
then.
