Depression is one of the most cruel illnesses one can have. Not only does it rob you of your life, it makes you avoid getting help for it. I have suffered horribly since early childhood until age 42 when I finally reached out for help. I take Zoloft 100mg per day and it literally saved my life. I still go through "low" times and I still wonder why God doesn't answer my prayers for comfort and peace. But I believe His promise that He will never leave me, and that He'll work out everything for my good. I jus have to remind myself that I don't know what I don't know. It's a real lesson in trust (something I do not have on my own). If He keeps our tears in a bottle.....I bet He's got a 55 gallon drum with MY name on it!

Thank you so much for the stories shared by others who suffer with depression. I too suffer with clinical depression. Thank our Great God for his direction in helping me to medically treat the disease. For years I thought I lacked faith. Felt guilty. Thank God for his mercy and love. I now take 150mg of Zoloft a day. Have been on this amount for 1 year and am getting better every day. I have tried several other kinds of anti-depressants but quit taking them when I was better. Unless God chooses to totally heal me from this disease I will continue taking my meds. I never want to become as depressed as I was. Your web site is a wonderful blessing for Christains who have been harshly judged by other Christains for their depression. I also feel especially called to educate the Christian community that depre sion is an illness, not a sign of weak faith! I have been diagnosed with major (clinical) depression last November although I really noticed a change in me in September. It has been a very hard time coming to grips with being a Christian and being in depression. My faith has been crushed. Satan called a worldwide convention. In his opening address to his evil angels, he said, "We can't keep the Christians from going to church. It was quite a convention in the end. And the evil angels went eagerly to their assignments causing Christians everywhere to get busy, busy, busy and rush here and there.

G'day "Hopeinsight" I got your web site from Softerside' list that I'm now on also. It was your "Title" that caught my eye as mine is called "New Hope in Recovery" So I checked you out right away. Well I think it is a terrific site you have up here and all what you say is S ooo!!! true when one is a Christian with depression we feel so darn guilty that if and when I found the courage to tell someone We get the usual Christian platitudes, you know stuff like "IF" you keep your eyes on Jesus you will get better stuff like that and all it did was heap me up with more extra guilt, There is a book called " WHY DO CHURCHES SHOOT THEIR WOUNDED" (well something like that) and its so true. I have lost hope and I don't really want to go to church anymore. I was very faithful, but after I talked to my pastor about my depression, he said it was because of sin in my life and he removed me from my church work (positions, jobs, whatever you call hem). I feel so hurt I don't want to talk to anyone else about it. I went to a secular counsellor and he said it was okay to go to church and keep part of my life hidden. I quit going to see him, but I am taking zoloft for my depression. Actually, it has elped me be less angry, but it really hasn't done much for my depression. I have tried to go back to a different church, one where I have friends, but I am still unmotivated to participate or even go to worship services regularly. I want to get over this ut I can't seem to get anywhere. Well, I've already said more than I intended, but I really feel like God has let me down and I have let Him down. Some days I almost can't bear it. Thanks, for listening.

I am very glad I happened upon this sight. I have a Christian Webpage and like working on it. I had a total breakdown in Sept. 1993 and then breast cancer June of 94. Can not understand why in that order! Now am on mental medical leave, have osteoporosis I am dreading going back to work at a middle school as a bookkeeper/secretary but must on June 8. Would rather stay home and never leave house only for church. Am on medication for 4 years now. Have trouble with the public, crying, wish I could work f om home. I see my psy every 3 months. Been hospitalized once. Hope your webpage helps others in this situation, only way to cope is with God. I go with the theory, if I had diabetes I would have to control with medicine, depression is no different. I h ve very high highs and very low lows. I love my family and grandchildren. God and I are having a really hard time during this bout of depression. I feel like He has dropped me. I know that isn't true, but it is hard to keep in my head, especially when I want to kill myself. I feel like a real hypocrite talking to my pastor a out the depression. I am scared that they are going to think that I am not trying hard enough. I already think that. I don't want to believe others think that way about me. I know I have to give the problem to God. I feel brittle right now. I have not been to church since schhol started 3 mos. ago. I am parched for God and support in an environment that is non-hostile. I took an indefinate break from SHN until I feel ready to go back. I have bipol 1 that is tre ted but, the underlying, debilitating depression is always with me. I go to school and am working on my undergrad degree; I'm 35. I have just transferred to the university and have been bludgeoned with anti-God teachings. All of it is brazen and I have been unable to pray. My faith has been knocked off of its founda ion as a direct result of attending these classes that are permeated with Darwinism. And this has exacerbated some of my emotions. Some very seriously. I would like to be able to talk to christians about the kind of stuff people like me live with everyda . Also, I gave my e-mail address but it wrapped around I think. It's a long one! Good job creating this website.

Dear nmanser, Thank-you for the comments you left in my guest book. I will go back and re-phrase the part of my site that you quoted. The type of sin I was referring to is sin that a person is fully aware of but continues to indulge in, such as adultery or drug abus . We can choose to partake in such a lifestyle and even talk ourselves into believing that we are justified in doing so. The verse in Proverbs 28:13 says "He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy". To me, that implies a sin that a person conceals or hides from others....not a sin that is concealed from himself. Also, God has given us the Holy Spirit who dwells within us to guide us. Jesus tells us in John 16:13 " But when he, the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth." Because of this, there is no need of a "witch-hunt" to reveal our sins. You are right, God will show us if we have sin in our life that must be dealt with. All we need to do is ask his Spirit to reveal it to s. I hope this clears up any confusion I may have caused. You state, "If a christian has sin in their life that for whatever reason they do not confess to God and turn away from, then problems which may include depression are sure to plague them." Since I was "saved" at age 12 to now 50 I have had that line about hidden sin tossed at me. If it is hidden, then how can I confess it? Yes, we are all still in sinful flesh and no one can say they will die with all sins confessed or gone...except in the legal sense that Jesus has "cleared" us. Thus, my contention is, that, in an effort to feel less depressed, a self examination cum witch-hunt does me absolutely no good. Worse, it lets satan get a toehold to accuse me which is one of his roles. I really believe that if one is under the influence of some sin, then God will show us up front what it is. Meantime, don't forget that depression itself was t rmed a sin in medieval days. It is only by ignoring that woeful view and realising that depression is a disease like diabetes and can be triggered by others that I can take myself out of the picture and stop trying to justify myself. Unfortunately, the least comfort somes from Christians who, in any setting, in any religion, would be happy, stoic, social people and they see a sunny, easy personality as a sign of God's presence. To anyone who asks about hidden sin, I ask in return, Ok, I'll tell you mine if you tell me yours first. Freeing ourselves from sin is not the Gospel, anyhow, the Gospel is how God has freed us from s n, gratis. I am not getting free from sin: I AM free from sin insofar as it counts in the "big picture." But, in depression, one is beset with feelings of evil and sin so terrible that one does not wish to live. That's NOT a good time to look for more si s under the rug. ( :-)

Some reference material you may want to suggest that I believe the Lord has directed me to is: David Seamands,"Healing for Damaged Emotions". There is a complete chapter on Depression. The book as a whole is an exceptional! The chapter on the Wounded Healer is excellent as well. Also, a book called "Feeling Good, the New Mood Therapy" by Davi Burns. Excellent exercises for "taking your thoughts captive" and telling yourself the truth of God's Word. Thank you very much for having this web site.
