This pattern is very adaptable in making bigger afghans such as baby afghans and larger.
Materials (For Doll Afghan):
· Caron's "CuddleSoft" Baby Yarn (This is a sports-weight yarn.): (Colors are your choice.)
3 skeins for body of afghan;
1 skein for the border, (Double skein amounts for baby afghan.)
· Size G hook, or size needed to obtain gauge,
· Yarn Needle (For weaving in ends.)
Gauge: 8 stitches = 2"; 6 rows = 2".
Approx. Size: Doll = 19" W x 29" L, Baby = 30" W x 34" L.
(Note: In an afghan like this, gauge is not as important as just crocheting in a relaxed and comfortable manner. Do not worry if the gauge or size does not come out exactly.)
Chain (ch) a multiple of 4+3 to desired length. (For Doll size afghan ch 67, for Baby ch 115.)
Row 1: Sc in second ch from hk, sc, *dc in next 2 chs, sc in next 2 chs. Rep from * to end of chain. Ch 3, turn.
Row 2: (Turning ch is first dc of row.) Dc in second sc, * sc in next 2 dc, dc in next 2 sc. Rep from * across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Sc in next 2 dc, * dc in next 2 sc, sc in next 2 dc. Rep from * across. Ch 3, turn.
Repeat Rows 2 & 3 for desired length of afghan. End with Row 3. (For Doll afghan make 79 rows, for Baby make 93 rows.) (IMPORTANT: To have the correct amount of rows in order to make a border, you will need to count each row that begins and ends with a dc as two. This is because the multiple of 4+3 will apply for the border as well and you will be putting two stitches in the side of each dc-row.) In the final row, end off primary yarn. Turn.
Edging: Attach yarn to upper right hand corner above first sc. (Note: You will now be working in Rounds.)
Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc of Rnd),
Across top: Dc in next sc, * sc in next 2 dc, dc in next 2 sc. * Rep from * to * to corner, ch 3.
Across first edge: # Dc on edge of previous Row, 3 dc in next Row, (2 sc, 2 dc) across edge to corner, ch 3. #
(Remember to put 2 sts in the side of each dc-row and one st in the side of each sc-row.
Also towards the middle of each edge on this Rnd, you need to skip one sc-row to have the proper amount of stitches.),
Across bottom: (Working in the remaining loop of beg-ch) Dc in 2 sc, rep from * to * to corner, ch 3.
Across second edge: Rep from # to #, sl st in top of beg ch-3, ch 1, turn.
Rnd 2: Sc in same st and turning-ch, 3 sc in ch-3 sp,
Across first edge: #* Sc in next 2 dc, dc in next 2 sc. * Rep from * to * across, sc in last 2 dc, 3 sc in ch 3 sp. #
Across bottom: Rep from # to # once.
Across second edge: Rep from # to # once.
Across top: Rep from * to * across, sc in next dc, sl st in first sc of this Rnd, ch 3, turn.
Rnd 3: (Ch-3 counts as first dc of Rnd.)
Across top: Dc in next sc, *(sc in next 2 dc, dc in next 2 sc) to corner, ch 3, sk sc, dc in next dc, ch 3, sk sc. *
Across first edge: Dc in next 2 sc, rep from * to *.
Across bottom: Dc in next 2 sc, rep from * to *.
Across second edge: Dc in next 2 sc, rep from * to *, sl st in top of beg ch-3, ch 1, turn.
Rnd 4: Sc in same st as ch-1, * 3 sc in ch-3 sp, sk dc, 3 sc in ch-3 sp. *
Across first edge: # (Sc in next 2 dc, dc in next 2 sc) across, sc in last 2 dc, rep from * to * once. #
Across bottom: Rep from # to # once.
Across second edge: Rep from # to # once.
Across top: Rep from ( to ) across, sc in next dc, sl st in top of first sc, ch 3, turn.
Rnd 5: (Ch-3 counts as first dc of Rnd.)
Across top: Dc in next sc, *(sc in next 2 dc, dc in next 2 sc) to corner, ch 3, sk sc, dc in next sc, ch 3, sk 2 sc, dc in next
sc, ch 3, sk sc. *
Across first edge: Dc in next 2 dc, rep from * to *.
Across bottom: Dc in next 2 dc, rep from * to *.
Across second edge: Dc in next 2 dc, rep from * to *, sl st in top of beg ch-3, ch 1, turn.
Rnd 6: Sc in same st and ch-1, * (3 sc in ch-3 sp, sk dc) 2 times, 3 sc in ch-3 sp. *
Across first edge: # (Sc in next 2 dc, dc in next 2 sc) across, sc in last 2 dc, rep from * to * once. #
Across bottom: Rep from # to # once.
Across second edge: Rep from # to # once.
Across top: Rep from ( to ) across, sc in next dc, sl st in top of first sc, finish off. Weave in loose ends.
