In April, Maya Angelou was interviewed by Oprah on her 70+ birthday. Maya really is a marvel who has led quite an interesting and exciting life. Oprah asked her what she thought of growing older. And, there on television, she said it was "exciting." Regarding body changes, she said there were many, occurring everyday...like her breasts. They seem to be in a race to see which will reach her waist, first. The audience laughed so hard they cried. She is such a simple and honest woman, with so much wisdom in her words.

When I was in my younger days,
I weighed a few pounds less,
I needn't hold my tummy in
to wear a belted dress.
But now that I am older,
I've set my body free;
There's the comfort of elastic
Where once my waist would be.
Inventor of those high-heeled shoes
My feet have not forgiven;
I have to wear a nine now,
But used to wear a seven.
And how about those pantyhose-
They're sized by weight, you see,
So how come when I put them on
The crotch is at my knee?
I need to wear these glasses
As the print's been getting smaller;
And it wasn't very long ago
I know that I was taller.
Though my hair has turned to grey
and my skin no longer fits,
On the inside, I'm the same old me,
It's the outside's changed a bit.
But, on a positive note...

I've learned that no matter what happens, or how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow. I've learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights. I've learned that regardless of your relationship with your parents, you'll miss them when they're gone from your life. I've learned that making a "living" is not the same thing as making a "life." I've learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance. I've learned that you shouldn't go through life with catcher's mitt on both hands. You need to be able to throw something back.

I've learned that whenever I decide something with an open heart, I usually make the right decision. I've learned that even when I have pains, I don't have to be one. I've learned that every day you should reach out and touch someone. People love a warm hug, or just a friendly pat on the back. I've learned that I still have a lot to learn. I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.

What ever happened to employee loyalty? Some things to consider.

Top Management may be asking this. Why do employees seem to not care anymore? Supervisors may wonder why.

Do you treat others how you really want to be treated?
Do you worry about "appearences" rather than your employees' morale?
Which is more important: the bottom line or the quality of your products and services?
Do you cut jobs and services to "cut expenses" yet top level executives keep getting raises and bonuses?
Do you "over react" to statements made by an employee rather than listening to the message the employee meant?
Do you reward loyality or brown-nosing?
Which is more important to you: God or money?

Unfortunately it seems that more top executives and upper management no longer promote loyalty and honesty. People no longer seem to practice what they preach. There is more concern about what people think and playing politics rather than advocating for what is right and making positive changes. Managers do tell lies knowingly. It's one thing to have struggle with memory problems but it's another thing to "not recall" something and then admit it privately but deny memory of it publicly. People's sin nature comes though: self centeredness, prideful, cheating to get ahead, "doing unto others before they do unto you", holding grudges, being revengeful, unforgiving, cursing, immoral behavior, putting down or taking advantaged of the poor, disabled and elderly, stealing, calling what is right, wrong, and calling what is wrong, right.

It's sad but this is what many people do and when those same people are in authority it leads to a downfall of the company, government or whatever those people are over. Look at Enron and other companies excutives facing legal charges. God will bring justice. A good example is Isreal in biblical times. The nation prospered but when the people kept going after idols and sinful ways the nation fell and the people were scattered. I've seen it happened 2 times in my life (a college dept and management at a former employer).

People who do have a conscious will "tire" of the sinful ways and call for change (ex. the TV networks extreme sexual content that esculated at the super bowl half-time show). People are tolerant for what seems a long time but then when it seems forced upon them, people will demand changes. At first there will be a few who will complain and want a change but as the problem continues the evil will eventually be exposed and changes will then be made.

Therefore any top level managers or executives reading this, please work to make positive changes in your organization. Be sure to work with lower level management to promote loyalty to their subordinants. "Front-line employees", "lowerer level employees", and non-management employees are loosing their loyalty to you. Too many people have been wronged by management. True some employees are a problem and actions were justified but to cut an employee's job due to "budget" while upper management gets a "bonus" this is plain wrong. All should be done to motivate employees to produce quality and success of the company. This is only done when management and top executives are loyal and supportive of the people they supervise and serve.
